Ladies and gentlemen,

Sorry for the intrusion, but I'm up against it time wise.

I need to get a clip I have converted into a satiable format to be 
played by a very old version of quicktime (3.something)

I have the clip source in .wmv and .mov. I think it's been encoded using 
something called H.264

I'm going to start messing around with total video converter, but any 
pointers appreciated.

Currently quicktime which is installed on the work computers cannot play 
the file - it gives a warning along the lines of "quicktime might 
encounter difficulties playing this clip" etc.

I feel sure it's a codec issue but I don't really know where to start. 
I'm posting to the wrong group for a start I'm sure!

Any pointers (including the right newsgroup) welcome!

Simple way is to update Quicktime

Indeed, unfortunately that is not an option do to the spec of the 
machines and restrictions on what we can actually do with them (group 
policy) etc.

MOV format is very much like AVI in that it's a "wrapper" for a number of 
different compression schema. All you need to do is find out which codecs 
were the best when Quicktime 3 was in use, then encode your video using that 
setup.

The Sorensen codec was introduced with QT3 - it might be an idea to use 
Sorensen 1 as your video format.

The deadline has passed now, but thanks for that. I did recode it into 
sorenson 3 and cut the audio down to 22.5khz mono at 64kbps, but it 
still didn't play. Bah!  Wish I had tried Sorenson 1 now!

If it's any consolation, I wasn't suggesting Sorensen 1 from a position of 
knowledge (no change there, then). I just figured version 3 wouldn't work 
because it's the current version, and your machines would only have access 
to the version that came with QT3 which I assumed to be Sorensen 1.

different compression schema. All you need to do is find out which codecs 
were the best when Quicktime 3 was in use, then encode your video using that

The deadline has passed now, but thanks for that. I did recode it into 
sorenson 3 and cut the audio down to 22.5khz mono at 64kbps, but it 
still didn't play. Bah!  Wish I had tried Sorenson 1 now!

If it's any consolation, I wasn't suggesting Sorensen 1 from a position of 
knowledge (no change there, then). I just figured version 3 wouldn't work
