Time Team, Sunday Feb 10th
Time Team on Channel 4 tomorrow features a dig in Shooters HIll
looking for WW2 defences and what they TV guide calls "bunkers". Might
be worth a look, even if the bunkers turn out to be an old air raid
shelter.

Many thanks for this tip - I would otherwise have missed it. Most
interesting.

So, what WAS the mysterious 'secret control centre' they found? Any ideas?

See http://www.subbrit.org.uk/sb-sites/sites/s/shooters_hill/index.shtml for
a few pictures of the bunker taken a couple of years ago.

It looks like a mysterious secret control centre.

It seems to big to be a Home Guard radio hide, and a bit too obvious.
Some sort of battle headquarters for the defences in the area would be
more likely. As for the other shelter, they should have visited the
Subrit site beforehand and save themsewlves a lot of time!

Indeed, all the Auxiliary unit hides identified so far appear to have been
much better camouflaged and in remoter locations. I guess there is the
possibility that it was a Zero Radio Station, but again it seems a little
too obvious despite the rockery.
The only thing that I am still a little unsure about with the air Raid
shelter is the function of the flanged 'pipes'.
The explanation calling them supports for the earth rebuttment does not
explain the flanges, and why elsewhere on the site the more normal angle
iron stakes were used for that purpose.

They looked a little like what you would see at the bottom of a radio
mast but I would have expected them to be embedded in concrete if they
were for a proper mast though adequate for a temporary one. They seemed
to suggest that they were actually manufactured with a point at the
bottom rather than just pipe that had been hammered flat to create a
sort of point. If it had just been wanted to support a wooden revetment
then the obvious thing would be to use a piece of wood.
