Underground 'object' in Birmingham in mid 90s
Wondering if anyone can shed some light on the following?
I remember being told by a friend in the mid 90s that some local
authority in the Birmingham area (maybe Birmingham Council) had
started the renovation of some area of waste/derelict ground, near to
Birmingham, possibly near the airport. At some point, whilst leveling
the ground, the top of a largish concrete structure was encountered.
I don't know the exact details, but then either demolition experts
where bought in to destroy it, or to dig around it to investigate it,
and after spending quite a lot of time they surmised that whatever it
was had a 'roof' at least several metres thick of concrete. No record
of any such structure could be found in the records of the planning
department.
I seem to remember that eventually the decision was made to leave the
object in situ and landscape over it, as would be too difficult to
remove, and there were supposed concerns over what it might contain.
The source for this info I think worked in some capacity for the
relevant planning or architects department, so it seemed relatively
believable.
Has anyone ever heard of this and could maybe shed some light?
