Ex-treasurer stole £40k to leave parachute club broke
THE ex-treasurer of the Scottish Parachute Club stole £40,000 from it to pay
for luxury holidays and designer clothes.
George Todd embezzled so much money the 45-year-old club was almost forced
to close.
Todd, 34, took money donated by lottery charity funding and left the club
with massive debts which members had to bail out.
Perth Sheriff Court heard the Direct Line training manager, who drove a BMW
Z3 sports car, used the money to fund an extravagant lifestyle.
Todd, formerly of Airdrie and now living in London, admitted embezzling
£40,000 between 1997 and 2001. He will be sentenced on June 7.
Even after members became suspicious about disappearing funds, Todd faked
bank statements to convince them he was innocent.
Club chairman Kieran Brady said Todd's greed had been almost catastrophic
for the Perthshire-based club.
Mr Brady said: "He bought the best of everything, and just spent the money
on wine, women and song."
