This is, of course, exactly what happens. In the local infant and junior
school the children are constantly assessed (informally and mostly
without their knowing) and a close watch is kept on their progress. Each
teacher has lists of which kids need extra jbex to bring them up to the
level at which they are expected to be jbexing[1] (or above) and such
attention is given either by the teacher, the TA under the teacher's
direction, or specialists brought in for the purpose.

The amount of detailed supervision is startling if you actually get
involved and see how it's done.


[1] Which is related to their scores on admission and also on how well
or badly they've done in comparison to existing expectations.
