Tom's selfishness killed his wife.  That is, she disappeared under 
mysterious circumstances.  She was breaking away from him.  He couldn't 
tolerate the idea of her with another man, so he killed her.  Soon he will 
commit suicide to evade prosecution, like his father-in-law did.

She was supposed to die by other means and her husband and father grieve her 
death; however Nature has her own ideas, so I guess this is how it shall be. 
Her husband was selfish and murdered her.
