I actually prefer its alternative name of stag's-horn clubmoss, as that 
describes the way the cones grow in pairs, occasionally three, which 
helps distinguish it from its relatives.

I've never looked at mosses before (I'm the animals person, Jenny's the 
botanist!) and I can't find my 50 year old "Observer's book of Mosses & 
Liverworts" Time for a new one, methinks!

Hmm, you won't find clubmosses in that book, because just to be pedantic 
(who me?), clubmosses are not mosses! They are pteridophytes, grouped 
with horsetails and ferns, hence described in books on ferns, etc., or 
in major floras.
