Hi quality connectors source in UK ?
Hi Chaps,
I've just bought a new flight pack charger (Graupner Ultramat 17 - looks jolly
good so far) and I am marking the occasion by changing from the plethora of
different connectors I've been using up to now to the Deans type. I have been
able so source some cheap Jamara branded equivalents, but I wondered if anyone
here knows a UK source for the original (and presumeably best ?) Deans branded
ones ? I also need a source for good quality gold plated 4mm banana plugs as
I'm not very happy with the ones I've been getting from Maplins.
Many thanks,

That looks pretty good. I also use ashtek
http://ashtekelectronics.com/shop/
who has a good range of general RC electronic parts, but I think his
Deans style connectors (which I don't use) are relatively expensive.
I've also been a bit dissappointed witht he last order I placed in
that it's taken 3 days to ship when I paid for special delivery, normally
he ships on the same day though. Hmmm, not really a good advert, but
in the past he'd always been OK.

Hi,
Thanks to you both for your answers. I see Ashtek does have the 4mm gold plated
banana plugs I need, but like GoBrushless, their T-Type connectors are not
genuine Deans ones.
The search continues...

Which would appear to be a complete answer to the question "who are the dogs for
leccy stuff in the UK". Wrong but complete.
My question is : "Where can I buy _genuine_ Deans T-Type connectors in the UK
?" Which, if you do the obvious and go to Overlanders' website, you will see to
be an entirely different question.
Cordially,

It looks like aurorra's your best bet for real ones. I'm not convinced
that they're necessarily all that much better than anything else, mind,
but as someone who uses connectors professionally I'd not rate *any* of
the connectors we use at the currents they're rated for in the RC world.
If you look for a 50A connector (which is the real Deans rating) it'll be
several times the size and have several times the contact area of a Deans.
Having said that, of course, if I were doing most of the stuff we use for
RC professionally it'd be several times the size, rating, and many 10s of
times the cost. Speed controllers really get me - they're so puny for
the currents they handle. Try buying a speed controller for a DC or AC
motor of the ratings we're using for something industrial and you're
buying something many times the size and cost. But then we don't expect a
speed controller or motor to last more than a few 10s of hour's use, and
therein lies the difference - industrial stuff has to last for many 10s of
thousands of hours.
You said you weren't happy with the 4mm gold plated connectors from Maplin.
Why not? What's the problem you have with them? I've never noticed any real
problems with the connectors I use for RC - well except for the crappy
little servo connections that I'd condemn in an instant if I saw them on
any real piece of kit. Oh, and the poxy little LiPo balance connectors that
aren't really up to the job but only work because the constant voltage
charge regime at then end of the charge cycle negates the effect of the
connector resistance.

in my next plane and I want to give it the best shot. I've seen various curtrent limits quoted for T-Type connectos but somewhere saw 90A peak (70A
continuous) quoted for the genuine Deans ones.

My post did read like that but actually all I meant that the Maplins 4mm banana
plugs I have are not gold plated. Since reading your post I have discovered
Maplins do sell gold plated ones but they are £1.59 each and they only had red
ones in stock in my local shop so I will probably try the web. The non-gold
plated Maplins 4mm banana plugs have the crappest cable strain relief system
ever which offers no strain relief at all so the wires are forever coming
unsoldered.
Cheers,

I couldn't find a rating on the deans site www.wsdeans.coma although they
do say it has less series ressitance than the equivalent length of 12AWG
copper - that's not all that low really becasue 12AWG is only 3.3sq.mm.
However seeing as we overrate things so much they'll be OK. Me I prefer
gold plated 4mm stubs, but also I don't use anything above about 50A and
I've vaguely been thinking of changing to Deans because they're a bit
more convenient - hence my interest in your post. One site helpfully
rated them at "80A of power" which is interesting. ;-)

Ah, I just wondered if you'd encountered a problem that might not be obvious,
seeing as I've had no probles using 4mm plugs since forever. I've never had
any problem with the wires breaking, though, but I've only ever used
non strain-relieved ones with that thick 512-odd strand silicone coated
flexible cable, and they're sufficiently lexible that the wire doesn't
seem to want to break. They will break if you don't have relief for 16- or
32-strand wire, though.

are you pulling on the wire to remove them? I have a set on my charger
that's been going a few years and its never broken the wires yet
