Hydro foam / Hydrofoam Boat/plane
I saw the original Michael Connally video on the web and immediately
knew that I had to have something like this.
Then I got bogged down in researching which one to buy! There seem to
be the most enormous amount of different models of "hydro
foam" ("hydrofoam"?) models available. I am looking for one which is
ready-to-fly, robust, reliable and with good range (and therefore
altitude) (at least 250m).
ebay offers a thing called Flydroboat but its marketing video is for
another manufacturer's model - does anyone know how the Flydroboat
performs? There is also a lot of talk about the Storm Launcher though
I get the impression that its operating range is a bit low and I
gather that it is not really powerful enough to get proper flight.
There are various other machines (hydro hawk, walkera, miss hangar
one, flyingpowerboat, etc.) made by various companies but am getting
very confused by what's on offer.
Should I be aiming for something made of EPP? Or is Depron
acceptable? If so, 3mm or 6mm?
Sorry for all the various points but I really need someone to be able
to point me in the right direction. Any help would be gratefully
received. Budget: £150-ish.
Thanks, Alex

Hi
After checking what was available late last year, I eventually bought
a "Miss Hanger One" from Preston Model Centre. It went together
easily but turned out a tad heavy (overuse of glue on my part) plus a
heavy motor. The only problem was that zip kicker tends to melt the
foam if you are too enthusiastic using it.
For one reason or another I have only had a couple of flights so far -
a hand launch and a take off from rough grass. I haven't flown it on
water yet (I think that makes sense) but anticipate no problems.
First impressions were impressive; rock steady, manoeuvrable and the
best description I can give is that it flies just like a proper plane.
The motor is a cheapo bell motor, which provides ample power. I keep
intending to send to the US for a purple peril, which being more
powerful and lighter should make the MH1, ballistic.
There is a video <mho_hr.wmv> at:-
<http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=916723>
showing the thing in action. I used to have the WWW for a more
impressive video showing it flying inverted, hovering, vertical
climb-outs and - believe it or not - knife edging, but cannot find it
now.
Now that Spring has arrived I certainly intend to see what it is
capable of - I have the evil idea that it could be fun to take it down
to the local (very sedate - all schooners and sailing ships) model
boat club and frighten the life out of them. 8^)

Re: Hydro foam / Hydrofoam Boat/plane
Thanks, KGB.
I must have made a mistake on my research - I was not aware that Miss
Hangar One was a kit. At the risk of appearing lazy, I am keen to get
something which I can use "straight from the box".
I am very amateurish on the building side of things so things like
"zip kicker" mean nothing to me, I'm afraid! My apologies in advance
if this group is intended for model builders as opposed to people like
me who fear that his cack-handedness may seriously affect the
aerodynamics of my new toy.
However, if people can assure me that the building process (inc
installing all the electrics) is not as complicated as perhaps I fear,
then I am open to getting something which I will build myself. Just a
bit nervous of my limitations - my track record consists of building a
Tamiya Sand Scorcher buggy back in the early 80's, and I reckon that
this will be considerably more taxing!

if you have never flown a model before you are going to be disappointed
after about 10 seconds after it takes off and it turns back into a kit

Re: Hydro foam / Hydrofoam Boat/plane
Id go for the Pirahana from Robot birds, its made from EPP so its very tough
and easy to fix using some super glue, plus you can buy spare parts for it
and its cheap

HI Guys,
I have just ordered the MEP-787 Flying Boat from www.nitrotek.co.uk
looks fairly good from the video and costs just £99 and comes ready

Only slight worry is the radio shows to be its on 27mhz
All being well it will arrive tomorrow so I will see how it handles
then.

one slight point the video is not showing the model you have brought its
a completely different model, the video is the original model that
started the craze not the cheap Taiwanese copy which is all you have

Re: Hydro foam / Hydrofoam Boat/plane
HI Guys,
I have just ordered the MEP-787 Flying Boat from www.nitrotek.co.uk
looks fairly good from the video and costs just £99 and comes ready
built.
Only slight worry is the radio shows to be its on 27mhz
All being well it will arrive tomorrow so I will see how it handles
then.

one slight point the video is not showing the model you have brought its
a completely different model, the video is the original model that
started the craze not the cheap Taiwanese copy which is all you have
brought and I will be surprised if it flys half as good

model in the video is so far from what he brought you could be right(I

Hi
Sorry to be pedantic, but - having seen a picture and read a spec of
the model in question - shouldn't your question have been, "Did it
fly then??" 8^)

model in the video is so far from what he brought you could be right(I
did wonder if hes not affiliated to the website anyway) I do wonder how
these sites manage to sell a product based on a video of something
completely different, its a bit like Ford having a video of a Ferrari
saying this is what you Ford will go like

Re: Hydro foam / Hydrofoam Boat/plane
HI Guys,
I have just ordered the MEP-787 Flying Boat from www.nitrotek.co.uk
looks fairly good from the video and costs just £99 and comes ready
built.
Only slight worry is the radio shows to be its on 27mhz
All being well it will arrive tomorrow so I will see how it handles
then.

Re: Hydro foam / Hydrofoam Boat/plane
HI Guys,
well the thing finally tested and I have to say its not too bad, I did
manage to get it flying and did a few loops and a couple of circuits
but I landed it rather hard and broke one of the tail sections.
The controls are a bit strange as you have the rudder on the right
stick not on the left as normal mode 2. I plan on removing the
receiver and putting in a proper futaba one in later so I can use my
computer radio.
its a bit crazy on the grass and handles a bit like a hovercraft but
on the water its quick.
