Perma-Grits - Mollycoddle or abuse ?
Hi,
The question is as per title : I've just bought my first ever Perma-
Grit sanding block (Type 140 coarse + smooth) and I just wondered if
anyone here has any tips on their use ? I read once that new files
should be saved to be used only on aluminium and brass until they are
a bit worn then to use them on steel. Are there any similar
strictures on using Perma-Grits on hardwoods before/after balsa ? I
have some leading edges to sort out of which half are balsa and
t'other half maple, will balsa clog the new grit surface ?
Any other tips ?
Thanks,
Mike

I've had a Permagrit sanding block for several years - one side is 180 grit
abd the other a coarser grade - can't remember what.
I've used it on all sorts of timber and never had any real clogging but if
there is any hint of this I give it a scrub with a wire brush and normal
service is resumed.
I've also used it occasionally on non ferrous metals - don't know how long
it would stand up to using on harder stuff though - too tight to risk it...>

Should it get clogged with glue etc. that does not scrub out with a
brush use Nitromors or similar paint stripper on it as per the Nitromors
instructions and it will be good as new. When you do this you may lose
the gold colour but do not worry it still works.

I fount that using them for hard materials like glass fibre, carbon
etc took off the superbly keen edge they come with so they aren't so
good on balsa, had to replace the surface of my 300mm long block for
this reason but they do sell replacement surfaces at reasonable price.
Since then I keep one s specially for hard materials. The little
rotary burrs are a god send for putting holes in canopies, cowls etc.
