Cheers

I've got the LCD motion detector model - it works fine.
The trouble is, where I went (old coal mining & railway land), it could
detect the stuff under the earth ok but I couldn't dig up the rock hard
ground, I think I need a small pickaxe.

In that case, see if you can scrounge up an old-type Army entrenching
spade, the sort with the wooden handle. The modern ones are useless
flimsy things, bend soon as look at 'em, but the older wooden ones were
classic British engineering and built to last.
You can fix the folding blade in three positions; folded, pick/mattock
and shovel form. The shovel form isn't half bad; sharpen the edge and
you can cut into turf beautifully (makes it easier to put back) and the
mattock form is pretty good on gravel, too.

I've got a decent digging trowel with a footrest that I got from a metal
detector shop, but this site where I go, the ground is so compressed
that it's almost rock hard. I found a multi purpose pick axe on ebay but
it was a modern one and looked to be rather weak so I didn't buy it.
Regards Mike.

Go for the older type of stuff, secondhand even. Brand new army kit
these days is pretty useless; see the SA-80 for a good example.

After Easter it'll be car boot sale time so I'll look for something
there, we have quite big car boot sales near here in the Spring/Summer.

They are all made in China, but the construction quality is adequate
having regard to the price.
I go for the Motion Detector type.
