The real secret sex life of plants

Who hasn't found a hyperlink-making facility on the browser she uses
for reading this ng, probably because it's too old (Navigator 4.7),
so if you have to cut and paste rather than just clicking, accept
her apologies! though it's possible that that happens automatically.

It's fine here. And rather funny too, for us who care about such things.

Most newsreaders will display a link like that as a link, ones with
spaces, brackets and other funny characters may cause a problem though,
unless you post in HTML, which isn't acceptable for Usenet.

Delimiting the URL with angle brackets thus,
<www.dingdongbellpussysinthewell.com> solves a lot of problems, most
notably preventing a very long URL from being split across lines and
thereby getting broken.

Or there's TinyURL.com ;-)

Sure, and plenty of others similar to it, but I prefer a
human-readable URL so that I can see the target and decide if I want
to go there or not. Who knows where clicking on one of those
meaningless shortened ones might take you?

Ah, a Windows user, I can see why you might be worried by an unknown URL

Not necessarily. I'm also using Agent, but running Mandriva 2008. I've
tried a LOT of the native Linux mail-plus-news programs, and I've just
not found anything as good as Agent. Apart from one error message when
you close Agent, it works just fine under WINE.

Before anyone tries it, though, I offer no guarantees about Agent 2.0.
That's ancient software.
Agent v3.3 and Agent v4.2 work under WINE, but those are the only ones
I've used.

I prefer distinct programs for each job. Some people use Wine to run
40tude or Gravity, whatever floats your boat (not sure about gravity
floating anything;-)).
Agent is a rare breed, a combined mail and newsreader that actually works.
Claws Mail works OK for news but I never tried it for mail as I've used
Thunderbird for that, in fact Thunderbird and Firefox made my transition
to Linux relatively pain free since both programs work near enough the
same in both OSes. Thunderbird becomes Blunderbird when it comes to news
though, filtering is weak. Don't get me started on Outhouse express,
hopeless, absolutely hopeless.
I use Pan for news at the moment, being able to filter out posts in
technical support groups that are x-posed to advocacy groups really
improves the signal to noise ratio. I've yet to succumb to the callings of
the slrn mafia ;-)
