OT: Plotter collection and repair
One of the reasons for the trip up to Scotland last week, was to collect a large
format (A0) inkjet plotter that we had bought on ebay. Mark McGrath kindly
arranged to collect it from the other side of the Forth, and we were able to
reciprocate by bringing up some lamps that he had bought from Rushden to his
factory at Broxburn.

The plotter had a couple of problems, one of which was a tiny one-way clutch
assy (Made by NTN in Japan) which had developed rotational slack, this allowed
the rollers that were supposed to draw the plotter paper through to be
stationary when the paper arrived, causing a jam.

I went back up to the factory after tea last evening, and had a spanner and
screwdriver session, after which a quick squirt of WD40 or somewthing equivalent
and it was fine. No slack at all between driving and freewheeling.

The next problm was an error message about "Media Jam" which is a Paper Jam to
us folks. That required an email last night and a call to Oce in Brentwood
today, and I have to say that I was very pleasantly surprised to receive instant
assistance and great courtesy from the people there. Quoted me £253.00 for a
call-out, but also offered phone help to try a few quick fixes.

Half an hour later we were away, the paper sensor had to be slightly moved as a
fix for a sensor problem that arose occasionally. Very nice to meet a large
company that has regained a bit of its service ethic.

Got to try it out on the PC now, but altogether a most satisfying conclusion.

Don't ask me about the ink spill in the new van....

Or the lovely black hands that came about by cleaning up parts of the
printer :-)) If there is some thing I pride myself in as a Service Engineer
it is helping a customer over the phone to help himself but then you get the
buggers who say "we pay you to fix it" so they get charged accordingly :-))
