Hi,
            I am supplying turned work on a sale or return basis to a
gallery for a
joint exhibition and have been asked by the gallery owner to make a £5
contribution towards drinks and nibbles for a private view.

I have no customers in the area and will not be able to attend
myself. I've never been asked before for such a contribution, does anyone
else think this is out of order?

 It does seem odd, but not too unusual. It does make it appear that the 
gallery owner isn't making too much money at the moment.  Maybe the last 
show was a wash-out and left him short of surplus funds.
Also, it does depend on various factors, how many other people are showing 
there, how big is the gallery. Most galleries are "sale or return".
 I guess if the gallery bought your stuff for sale, then, no, it wouldn't be 
right. But as the gallery has to defray costs for "The Grand Opening", it 
would be ok, IMHO. Let's hope the drinks and nibbles are up to the occasion, 
not just sour plonk, fruit juice orange cordial  and crisps.
