Man seeks advice on sewing machine for wife - Help me please !
Dear All,

OK, I have to admit to knowing nothing about sewing machines, but my
wife has started to learn to sew at a friends house so I'm thinking
about getting her a machine of her own and I really really need some
advice as I just don't know what I'm looking for !!

I've got a figure of about a £100 in my head for a 'starter' machine,
but other than that I don't know what to look for.

Should I be looking for an eBay machine, if so what make, model(s) can
anyone recommend?

Or what about a new machine, again any makes, models suggested would
be appreciated?

>From what I know my wife is wanting to make cushions, clothes and

other stuff (sorry, forgot what that was), if that helps in any way
shape or form?

Please help me !

Gavin.

Der Gavin,
I would reccomend the "Brother" sewing machine, some of the cheaper ones
retail for under £100, if I remember correctly.
Or.......
Go to a local sewing machine shop and ask for reconditioned machines for
under $100. Singer and Brother seem to have good reputations, as for others
I couldn't say.
 Good Luck.

Re: Man seeks advice on sewing machine for wife - Help me please !
Dear Gavin
I will second what Jackdaw said about looking for a reconditioned
machine from a reputable supplier. That way you will be able to get a
much better machine than if you got a new one. If you go for a good
brand, being second hand will not make a lot of difference.

I have always used Bernina and would recommend them to anyone.

Good luck

Eliza.

See the alt.sewing FAQ at http://www.cet.com/~pennys/faq/smfaq.htm

For £100, you'll get the equivalent of what you'd get if you spent
£5,000 on a car.

Where do you live? I know good sewing machine dealers in Leeds and
Nottingham.

See the alt.sewing FAQ at http://www.cet.com/~pennys/faq/smfaq.htm

For £100, you'll get the equivalent of what you'd get if you spent
£5,000 on a car.

Where do you live? I know good sewing machine dealers in Leeds and
Nottingham.

Good luck

Eliza.

Re: Man seeks advice on sewing machine for wife - Help me please !
I live in the US so I can't help with local dealers, but I've used Singers
for years and they've been great. I also have a Simplicity one that works
fine too. You probably want to wait on the Bernina, though, they are VERY
expensive machines. Unless you get a great deal on a reconditioned one. And
unless your wife REALLY gets into sewing. HTH

about getting her a machine of her own and I really really need some
advice as I just don't know what I'm looking for !!

I know good sewing machine dealers in Leeds and
Nottingham.

HTH
