Heavy duty coin boxes
Hi
I am interested in purchasing this coin box:
http://www.collectons.com/shop/item/3848/Heavy-Duty-14-Double-Row-Box...
But I cannot find it anywhere in the UK. It much to expensive to
import from the US, so I wonder if any know of a place in the UK to
buy these?
Best regards

I think the short answer to this question is that these boxes are not
available in the UK. However, with a bit of searching and ingenuity
you may find a suitable alternative.
Back in the 1960s and 70s there were many boxes on sale specifically
for coin storage with the 2"x2" envelopes, either the paper or plastic
type. I still have and use a number of these boxes, and they were
generally known as "knife boxes". They were usually dark blue in
colour and either had a close fitting deep lid or were the push-
through type. A year or so ago I tried to get a couple more of these
and found that they were not available anywhere. They just do not
seem to be made at all now in the UK.
As an alternative solution I investigated what was available and found
that there are still photo slide storage boxes around that take the
2x2 colour slides. These come in various sizes and one or two
envelopes can fit into each slot for one slide.
However, what I did find by chance was something in my local Tesco.
They had some some general purpose storage boxes for office or
personal use. One was small enough to take two rows of 2x2 envelopes
and deep enough to almost take another two rows on top. What I did
was make a couple of dividers in true "Blue Peter" style from thick
card and stuck it together with Pritt Stick adhesive. I then cut
another board to add as a divider between the top and bottom layers of
coins envelopes when I needed to.
Unfortunately Tesco no longer stock these boxes in my local store. It
may be worth trawling around places like Homebase or even IKEA to see
what they have in the way of small storage boxes that are similar to
the ones I have and now use.
Best of luck in your searches.

Re: Heavy duty coin boxes
Knife boxes are still available, I saw some a couple of months ago at what
was my local coin fair (I since moved house 500 miles).
The top UK distributers for this kind of thing that come to mind are Vera
Trinder and Barrington Smith, both I think are now trade only, but if you
have a shop that gets supplies from them, ask to look in the catalogues.
Failing that, I suppose it wouldnt be so hard to blue peter your own...

Thanks very much for the tip about eBay. I found a couple of very
useful items by just searching on "storage boxes" in the Coins
category. One seller even includes 100 paper envelopes in the deal.
They are much, much better than the plastic type which over time can
tarnish any coins stored in them.

Re: Heavy duty coin boxes
With a few more minute's searching I found an even better source of
supply of coins storage boxes and envelopes on
http://www.tokenpublishing.com/shop.asp?cid=67
The paper envelopes sold here are acid and sulphur free - ideal for
coin storage.
