Re: incredible
Billy,
David (willowsstudio) also has a nice 3/- token at
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270338414878
Both of his tokens would make a nice addition to any collection.
Speaking of ebay deals, here's the last 1813 3/- token I acquired:
http://jerseycoins.com/jer_tokens/3shxi.htm .
This ebay special set me back a total of $20. Nothing to brag about, but it
does round on my collection of 3/- tokens.
On a small numismatic detour, the very first Jersey tokens I purchased were
in an auction of the Dr. Charles Nitka collection by Bowers and Merena on
March 8, 1997. (This was before the days of the internet, so acquiring
some of the rarer Jersey coins and tokens were very difficult -- to say the
least.) He had probably had one of the nicer Channel Islands' coin
collections in the U.S. at the time. Anyway, I went to Baltimore to get
something from the Dr. Charles Nitka collection. There were several
collectors and dealers attending and although I couldn't compete with the
big boys on most of the lots, I was the only bidder for his two 1/6 tokens
and his only 3/- token. His nicest 1/6 token was described as "AU-58,
untoned" and the 3/- as "EF-40. Usual weakness at centers". I also picked
up his nicest proof penny, an 1870 1/13 of a shilling coin.
You can see these tokens at:
http://jerseycoins.com/jer_tokens/18.htm
http://jerseycoins.com/jer_tokens/3shi.htm
Both of these examples are cleaned -- err, untoned -- but if you remember
this was before the internet and acquiring any example here in the U.S. was
an adventure.
Evidently, the demand for these tokens has increased in the last few years.
I wonder why?
Harold
