1949 Jersey Pound in Seaby Coin & Medal Bulletin
Does anyone have the 1949 edition of the Seaby Coin & Medal Bulletin? If
so, can someone tell me what it says about the Jersey one pound coin?
See:
http://books.google.com/books?id=IxIaAAAAIAAJ&q=jersey+coins&dq=jersey+coins&lr=&pgis=1
for details.
Thanks,
Harold

Harold, the Seaby Coin and Medal Bulletin was a monthly trade journal,
with coin news and articles followed by a list of coins for sale.
Pages were numbered consecutively, and a bound annual issue was
offered, plus binders for each year (each issue was 2-hole punched).
Apparently what was digitized here is the annual volume. My set (back
to 1956 only, sorry) is kept in binders. The ANA Library surely has
the full 1949 set or a bound volume, and could loan it to you as a
member. (And in fact, you ought to borrow the whole series, 5 years
at a time--you would find more items of interest than just this, as
the digitizing is hit or miss.) Click on http://www.money.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Join_Renew
to download the ANA membership form and join the ANA, if not already a
member.

Correction: "house organ," not "trade journal." Sorry!

I'm sorry to disappoint you. I have an almost complete set of bound
Seaby 's Coin & Medal Bulletins, including the 1949 issue.
The pages are numbered sequentially over the twelve monthly issues.
On the pages numbers mentioned (9, 113 and 344) there is no mention of
Jesrey One Pound coins. Page 9 is part of an article by Peter Seaby
on Celtic Coinage, and Page 113 is part of another article on Roman
British coinage by Gilbert Askew.
Somehow I don't think your search result is relevant to this
particular publication. Even the other references are not relevant at
all. Perhaps the mention of a Jersey One Pound coin dates from around
the timeIn the late 1970s or early 1980s when the UK was going over to
a pound coin.

OK, here's what's happened. The digitizing people ASSUMED that
Seaby's Coin and Medal Bulletin began in 1949 (this may be correct,
but my copy of Clain-Stefanelli's bibliography is on another floor).
They then picked up the snippets you saw, and erroneously attributed
them to the 1949 volume. In fact, they could be from ANY volume from
1949 to 1989. Isn't Google wonderful? Sends us off on a wild goose
chase.
My advice to just join the ANA and borrow the whole publication by
mail in five-year chunks still holds. I recall seeing a number of
items relating to the Channel Islands, not to mention offers of their
coins. You would also enjoy the Numismatic Circular, as it has items
on Channel Islands money from time to time.

Thanks Bob for clearing up this mystery. It never crossed my mind that
Google had the wrong date.

Re: 1949 Jersey Pound in Seaby Coin & Medal Bulletin
I have at long last had chance to check out the original reference at
the beginning of this thread. The main item about the introduction of
a £1 coin in Jersey is contained in the 1981 volume of Seaby's Coin
and Medal Bulletin. Confusingly the news item is on page 8 not page 9
as quoted.
The news item describes, as I originally suspected, the proposed
introduction of a £1 coin in Jersey. A description of the design and
related historical facts are given. The coin in question is the
square shaped, cupro-nickel coin commemorating the Bicentenary of the
Battle of Jersey 1781-1981.
Hope this helps.
