Happy August & Happy Holidays
Just to say that my alter ego is off on his holidays today, the
laptop's going too but there'll be no online services. And as he has
to go, I have to go too! So you all can rest easy for a while free
from tiresome debates on vetting, explorers, por, etc. :-)

I'm off to the old land of the Brigantes (that's northern England!!)
Doing a bit (a lot!) of travelling on Shank's pony over the eastern
fells of Cumbria, Howgills and northern Pennines. I'll be on my own
and looking for solitude with lots of WC. No definite itinerary but I
plan to be in Teesdale on about Thursday next week looking at
waterfalls.

(Lurkers! Don't send out the Teal Helicopters because you won't find
me.)

Enjoy your holidays if you're off too. I'll see you back here in just
under 2 weeks time.

I left all my old scouting stuff at home just to make sure, besides I
believe the tracking chip in my appointment card has now been
deactivated so the teal satellites should not have been able to get a
lock on me. To make doubly sure I went in disguise and not as GAGS.

Oh 'eck!

My spectacles do have plastic lenses, my nose is 'funny' at the
moment, and I've still yet to shave this morning!

I've been found out!

I'm sure you're an undercover infiltrator for the SA's black ops dept.
I'd better watch what I say in future. Before I know it you'll be
calling me Dave seemingly like everyone else round here!

No call him GAGS as that is how we all know him on here.

I would still love to know where the name GAGS comes from though as even
though I do know who he is the name bears little resemblance to his real
self ........

As I understand it...

Once upon a time, there was the "Programme Review", and the
"Programme Review Implementation", and the "Uniform Review", and
"ScoutCount", and "ScoutCount II", and the demise of the
ScoutBase volunteer team, and changes to the Adventurous Activity
Authorisation Scheme...

There were gainsayers for each of these projects or their method
of implementation. Some of the gainsayers had perfectly valid
arguments and sound reasoning for their points of view.
Nonetheless, pressure was brought to bear against these "Usual
Suspects", through "Line Management". One of the gainsayers
decided that this amounted to attempts to silence him, and remove
his right to free speech. Thus, this particular gainsayer
anonymised his usenet persona as "The Gagged One", which was soon
shortened to "GAGS". The only thing in common between the
anonymised pseudonymn and the real man is the initial letter of
both names!

Ah now I see.

I knew why he went under cover as it were but not where the name came from.

I could only think of his name against a comedian and associated gag and

I am the gagged one.

It's got nothing to do with a S. Wales anarchist publication.

It's got nothing to do with a oral reflex reaction.

It's got everything to do with:

gagged, v. tr. : To prevent from speaking or crying out by using a
gag.
gag, n. : An obstacle to or a censoring of free speech.

Or I could just be plain old Graham Arthur Gordon-Smythe!

MatSav's merry tale was nearly right.

It was a line manager. It was a veiled threat/order not to post here.
And it was all about a storm in a teacup.

It was like your DC saying: 'I lead scouting in this district,
therefore I, and only I, know everything about scouting, Don't speak
out of turn. If you want advice on canoeing, ask me and only me. If
you want advice on POR, ask me and only me. If you want advice on
where to sew your uniform badges on, ask me and only me. If you want
to know about finances, ask me and only me. If you want to know what a
GSL should be doing 12 minutes into an AGM, ask me and only me. Etc.
The rest of you can shut up.'

It's in the past.

I like the name GAGS so it's stuck.

I'm not a comedian. :-(

Sorry, but 'dragon slaying' was outlawed by a recent EU regulation
(672c (iii) of 01/04/09 I believe) after strenuous representations from
the WWF and PETA, and fighting Trolls is a contravention of their human
rights.
I'm sure that GAGS wouldn't be involved in any such dubious activities.
