Cooking Equip
We went to our first large camp this summer and saw several groups
cooking on very large what looked like ex-army cooking stoves. I had
a quick look online and do see anything similar and was wondering if
anyone knows where these types of pieces can be picked up.

If you are talking about a 5 Burner boiling table, then Ramco is your
best bet. The only problems are that you have to wait till they have a
tender and then bid on the lot you want. They usually come with oven,
pots, etc. So can be quite a good deal.

I bought six and two ovens and sold the surplus on ebay at about £40 -
£75 each depending upon condition, and made a small profit.

Oh, the other drawback, you have to collect from Skegness.

I would advise a visit before you place a bid to make sure you are
getting what you are bidding for.

Technically, these are exactly what they say they are, boiling tables.
They do have controls but essentially they are either on or off, and
although there are controls on the four ring burners, they never
completely cut the gas supply off. I've tried on all six and every one
was the same.

They boil VERY quickly, and they operate on propane at 15psi, or
sometimes you might find one with a petrol tank in the cage at the
side - having used one I think I know why they converted most to gas!

There are also smaller two burner petrol stoves but they are older and
not so easy to come by.

You can also buy individual burners. These are, I think, from modular
units, there are several of them fitted to the mobile Field kitchens.

We have something similar to this
http://www.armytents.co.uk/cooking-accessories/double-burners/prod_42.html
except ours is a little wider as there is room between the 2 burners to rest
a pan or kettle.

We also have one of these
http://www.armytents.co.uk/cooking-accessories/ex-wd-war-department-oven/prod_38.html
which when you get to grips with it is brill.

I must be a sad case, but all my Christmases would come at once if i could
have both of these!
I am sick to death of doing 'mass cooking' on these silly double burners
with a tiny flame running off of 907 Gaz bottles!
As for the oven, I had a local chap weld -up a solid steel box, rather like
a safe without a lock. We have to stoke up the mother of a blaze under it to
roast anything, basically the whole jobbie glows red and partially
incinerates the lower 50% while the top of it is uncooked.

BUT Dave ? Chris? what gas bottle do I need? I really don't want to cart a
full size calor bottle to week-end camps. Parents just can't fit them in
cars. Can I use a smaller red bottle, you often see builders using them. A
bit bigger than a football.

Chris,
So, they work sitting on top of a gas burner?
And you can sit then directly on top of a wood-fire?

All Propane regulators produce the same pressure, so the bottle size only
effects how long it lasts, and this depends on how much you use it.

I expect to get 4/5 days out of a 3.7Kg "Dumpy" or "Lego Head" bottle (less
in winter) assuming it is used to power a single double burner cooker, and
is used for 10-12 people.

We don't use butane anymore, it doesn't work well at low temperatures.

'Leggo Head' Sounds like you are describing the bottle I need -- I must see
where i can get a couple from, and the regulators.
I would think they would also be a better size for carrying in our open

NB. the oven has to sit over gas stoves or a fire. we use a couple of
different sorts of burners for them. (2 are pitrch/tar burners we
think and 2 are old army surplus ones. ) There are 2 holes in the
bottom of the outer skin of the oven and the flames go up them. There
are also 2 holes in the top. You leave them open to begin with to get
the air circulating and close them once it's hot.

The one on the fire is filthy and mucky. the other two are pristine.

Er, no they don't. The standard is 37mBar, but our boiling table runs
on 15psi. If we use a 37mB regulator it just sputters and goes out!

Re: Cooking Equip
Note that the large bottles, though the pressure is the same, produce
a much higher volume of gas. The volume produced (boiled from liquid
to gas) is proportional to the surface area of the liquid. We have
some large burners, simlilar some mentioned here and the won't run on
anything less than a 20 lbs tank (a North American thing).

Lots!

We have to start off with a full cylinder and when the pressure gets
too low for the boiling table we transfer the cylinder to the dixie or
the water boiler.

BTW, got a new water boiler for trad camping, a beer barrel modified
to boil water on an alter fire - cold water in hot water out :-)

At the Guide site at Foxlease in New Forest they have a version of these on
every site. It is made out of a galvanised dustbin welded to an altar fire!
However ashes get-in when you lift the lid. Your version is sealed, with a
funnel on top?

We tried to do one of those (without the altar fire) but found the bin
wasn't waterproof...

Anyone know anywhere we can get a metal dustbin that is waterproof
without any additional welding?

Did you persevere? With things like Kelly Kettles they tell you that it
may leak on the first few times that it is used.

Often these bins are only soldered or brazed, which IIRC has a lower
melting point than a proper weld.

No, as it *really* leaked - it put the fire out!

Que?

The regulator should produce the same what pressure no matter what, until
there is so little gas left that the pressure in the bottle is less.

Bugger wrong button. Sent too early...

There was a change to the law a few years back. We had a leaflet, which was
on the HQ notice board until a few months ago, but I think we still have a
copy.

I can't find the exact reference but from the Calor Gas site I think it is
related to

"The Pressure Systems and Transportable Gas Containers Regulations 1989, SI
1989 No. 2169 have now been superseded by the Pressure Systems Safety
Regulations 2000, SI 2000 No 128, which came into force on 21st February
2000"

There was something about anything above a certain limit, and I think that
may be 37mb being classed as commercial or industrial or summat.

"It depends on the age of your caravan. Until 2003, butane and propane
installations on touring caravans and motor homes required different
regulators - butane to 28mbar and propane to 37mbar. From September 2003,
all touring caravan* and motor home manufacturers started to fit new 30 mbar
bulkhead mounted regulators (designed to BSEN12864) in accordance with the
requirements of the new European installation standard EN:1949 which apply
across Europe, making European touring more simple."

I will look into it more, but a quick scan only showed 37mb (or less)
regulators for use in domestic or portable equipment.

The 1bar stuff e.g..
http://www.socal.co.uk/Hardware/Regulators/High_Pressure/Bullfinch_1041_Tinyreg_1bar_high_pressure_-_LPG_Calor_Gas_Propane_Regulator/67/16350

is labelled

"Suitable specialised Industrial Equipment
Read the manufacturers instructions

NOT TO BE USED WITH DOMESTIC OR LEISURE EQUIPMENT UNLESS SPECIFIED IN THE
APPLAINCE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS"

Mine dribbled for the first year and left stains around the base, but it
never put the fire out.

I thought they had a lifetime guarantee, have you tried sending it back for
repair?

Having said that I can't see it mentioned on their website :(

I also have the pot stand, and to be honest it is next to useless, as the
heat from the kettle is intense for 3 minutes and then stops, so you are
extremely limited as to what you can cook on it, certainly sausages were
black on the outside and cold in the middle :-(

I could have put a second brew on but that really defeats the object, I only
needed enough for washing up!

That's fine, the equipment specifies it needs it, and it isn't exactly
leisure equipment - it is war zone kit ;-)

Yes, we were given the barrel by a local pub. It has holes in the
wrong places. so the "wrong holes" were welded up.

If you imagine the barrel on its side, the vent hole is on top. This
had a stainless tube welded in place as in inlet, dropping down to
about 1 inch from the opposite wall of the barrel. Then a new hole was
drilled at 12 o'clock on the end of the barrel and a stainless spigot
welded in place. Job done. We do need to use a funnel to fill the keg
but that isn't really an issue.

It won't rust or rot, and so long as the filler and spigot are covered
when not in use it will remain free of creepie crawlies.

I'll put photos on the website when we get around to using it.

We take with us a smallish propane bottle for weekends or if going for a
week get a massive one on site and a smaller one.

The big one runs the burners for cooking on, the small one the burners for
the oven.

If necessary we swap things about as the week comes to a close.
