NYJAM 2009
North Yorkshire Jamboree ... apparently a new jamboree for 2009, but
continuing the tradition of Tookay 2000 and 2004, whatever that was.

Any experience of those events, or inside info about NYJAM? We're
seriously interested, and also like the look of the fully catered option!

Any hints welcome.

Not seen that one before, but on the face of it looks similar to most
of the County-based jamborees.

Although it says it's catering for Explorer age, it does look very
"Scouty" on the Activity front, with nothing really aimed specifically
at the older age range (with the single exception of the diving
photo). Having said that, I guess you are looking at Scouts anyway!

£100/head for catering is steep, but knowing how hard these camps can
be on the leaders - trying to get the kids fed and out to the next
activity in time - I guess it's a balancing act.

Jim

We are possibly looking at this camp too but self catering. £100 does sound
a lot for catering and if we do it ourselves it won't cost anywhere near
that, but just over £14 a day to just turn up and eat leaving the cooking
and dirty dishes to someone else (probably a professional caterer) then it
is not too bad.

Do take this comment into account though "As a Leader you do not have access
to take part in the day time activities and we would like you to help run
the activities during the day."

So exactly what they are expecting of adults in this respect I don't know. I
know that when we go on this type of event as adults we love the fact that
between meals we are free to relax and go and see what our kids are doing or
going off site (leaving 2 there).

The website states three full meals per day professionally provided by
a team of Royal Marines. The marines did the catering at the Splash
(water activities) site on the world jamboree and did an absolutely
superb job. Better than any professional caterer I have ever come
across.

Always as well to know in advance what is expected of you. Be Prepared
and all that. I have previously been on international camps where
leaders were asked to help out with activities without knowing in
advance what they would be expected to do. [Conversely, I have been on
camps where full details were supplied of what I would be required to
do - even to the extent of being given some routes I would be leading
for moorland walking and being instructed to walk those routes in
advance.] No point in giving an activity base (pioneering, for
example) to an adult leader without the requisite skills and
knowledge.

I had seen that somewhere but wasn't sure as I couldn't find it again.

Agreed.

This year we had 2 adults who went on staff but camped with us - but they
were only working at night. We had odd ones who volunteered to help
chaperone kids to offsite activites etc. The site staff had ensured that all
the activities were covered.

Re: NYJAM 2009
we are almost certainly going on that camp however i havnt heard most
of the details of it yet as i have been away on holiday. we are
probably going catered as we decided that it would be much less
hassle. to try and compensate for this slightly we are probably going
to try and do some fund raising to try to bring down the costs.

I think they do the catering for the Malvern Challenge - which is
really excellent.
