American canoe for £25
For pictures and detail see this website.

For words, read this:

"It's amazing how a simple idea can take on a life of its own once you
start. Have a desire to build a boat for fishing at your local lakes and a
bunch of American Ingenuity? Build a boat out of things American, Duct Tape,
PVC pipe, and plastic. "

Summer camp project anybody?

Risk assessment?

POR?

Activities permit?

And who said that paperwork will not stop scouting.

Not any more than it does raft-building on Class C waters, as someone
else has stated.

Re: American canoe for £25
I have had the pleasure of paddling one of these; constructed by James
Bentall's Scouts. As it was February and dark it was decided that a
qualified test pilot was required. The finished product was rather
broader in the beam than the one shown, in fact the part in contact
with the water was almost circular. This made propulsion a bit of a
challenge as the width and height of the gunwhales prevented the use
of kayak paddles, so I had to use a sculling draw stroke with a
Canadian paddle rather like (I imagine) a coracle. Don't ask me why
the North Mymms Scouts were making canoes in February in the dark;
reason doesn't enter into many of their undertakings and all the
better for it say I. James did once ask me to risk assess an overnight
camp on a raft moored in the middle of Bert's Pool. His Scouts were
all still alive in the morning so that was alright then.

We have had a cardboard canoe race as a District event. Build it and
then race it often followed by let's sink it.

That's a blanket statement. Oh of course, there are no Class C waters
in West Yorkshire, at least not for West Yorkshire Scouts ;-)

Yes, its an accurate reflection of POR.

Your County list 3;

* Redcar Tarn
* Shibden Hall Lake
* Wibsey Park Lake

Maybe not.

Can't comment on the last 2 but I am not sure how you get permission for the
first one.

It is at the side of the road with no restriction on access and there is a
slope into it etc.

There are signs up however about model boats and when powered model craft
can be used - there is no mention of full sized craft.

It is somewhere I have thought about for rafting but as I say don't know who
to contact or even if I need to.

Can't say anything about Redcar Tarn, but Wibsey Park Lake is in the
middle of a public park, it is a decorative pond, not really suitable
for much more than toy boats - hence, I guess it being Class C.

Shibden Hall lake was designed as a boating lake but I can find no
reference to it being used currently. I'm not sure that it would be
particularly suitable, but access may well be possible. I'm not aware
of anyone who uses it for canoeing or kayaking - though some may do.

I used to have a pond in my garden, that would be Class C but it
wouldn't have been suitable for kayaking - though it was deep enough
to roll in. ;-)

We have the frame of one of those taking up room in our equipment store. The
Explorers made it about 18 months ago, used it once and now it sits unloved
on top of a pile of tents. They keep promising to take it apart.
