Tables & Benches
Looking for some bright ideas.
Attending the Dutch Jamboree which starts at the weekend. Booked
equipment from the jamboree organisers months ago, including tentage,
cooking equipment and tables/benches.
They didn't have a price for the tables and benches at the time, but
estimated at about ¤20 per set of 1 table and 2 benches. We ordered 5
sets.
Just tonight (5 days before it starts and 4 before we leave) been told
that the cost just of the tables and bench sets is ¤842!!! I did suggest
that it would be cheaper for us buy them new and ship them over, and they
agreed, but due to a general shortage (i.e. high demand!) that's the
cost. I suspect that the "organisers" are not that organised, but we
still have to deal with the situation as it is.
We obviously can't afford to pay this amount, when our budget was based on
far less.
We have a Dutch "buddy" group whom we have asked for help, but they have
also already packed, and their leaders are away walking until Saturday.
We have also contacted other local Dutch Scouting groups that we know are
not attending the event and that we have contact with.
Another option is to aquire more pioneering poles and build something.
However, we need to bring our own ropes, and as we are flying, and our box
of other equipment has already been posted, it's not the most helpful time
to suggest this! And it's also not the most comfortable!
However, the question to you is - where could we buy/hire 3 or 4 tables
and benches that would deliver to Holland by Monday morning? We were
thinking of aluminium/plastic affairs, but can't find any online Dutch
shops with my non-existant knowledge of the language.
Any Dutch speakers/natives out there that could help or suggest something?
Ta

You might want to try contacting the organisers of the Haarlem
Jamborette, another Dutch international camp, to see if they can
help. Their charge last year was much nearer to your estimate!

Tony,
Its a long shot, and starting from basic, but I saw a troop camping last
week where every person brought their own folding camping stool and ate on
their lap. They were all £3.99 tripod alluminium style as:

http://www.surplusandoutdoors.com/ishop/877/shopscr49.html
Argos do these 4 person folding table / seat jobble for £20.
Have a great trip!

Or do it the Guide way and sit on the floor in a large circle...
Not that helpful I know but I often wonder at the amount of kit we
take to camp and whether it is really necessary.
I don't know where the Dutch Jamboree is being held but there is a
Decathlon in Amsterdam selling 4/6 person table and 4 chairs at 45
Euros.

I always think the guide way looks cute and cosy..... but I notice the
leaders always sit in chairs, like big chiefs. Mind you I see many guide
groups sitting on 'plastic-steps' .
Personally, I think a nice meal at camp should be eaten at a table, with
table manners, a jam-jar of dandelions & daisies and proper conversation.
Kids don't always get that at home, but they do with us.
We have a tradition of giving points for 'extras' and patrol meal times, and
they vie to out-do each other. By the end of camp they are producing table
mats, name places, music, candles, flowers, waiters. I once had a leader who
told them that the ultimate points was to have a waiter, on roller-skates
singing the 'Star Spangled banner'. And by God one PL managed it, on a
greenfield site. OK, cardboard skates...... but...

I understand very little of what's being discussed

A silly idea from last year; we bought each patrol a mascot ( a hot water
bottle cover!), among other things they had to Interview it, Throw it, Video
it and Take photos of it and take it to Brownsea Island.

We have 15 tripod camps stools, that we got for a pound each in Newcastle
not so long ago. Tried thema few times, but wouldn't like to live like
that for 10 days!
The Argos/Halfords/ASDS 4 person "jobbie" at £19.99 are perhaps not ideal,
but we have now costed sending 5 of them across, with our local friendly
mailing franchisee. £100 to buy - £70 to send (about 35kg!)
Still cheaper than the Amsterdam Decathlon or the local Kampeemarkt by a
long shot! Just means that it's not cost effective to send them back
though, as the mailing is heavily discountedon the way out.
Not an ideal solution, but still one option.
Other option we are pursuing is the hiring of tables from a local,
non-Scouting group that I have just come into contact with. They need to
ask their commmittee, and will get back to me tomorrow morning!
Option 3 of pioneering something is only going to be considered once they
get back to me with prices for hiring the poles!!! From current
experience, it may be easier to plant a seedling now! ;-)
We will have a great trip, but we may end up sitting on the grass!

Tony,
Maybe the cheapest is buy tables and benches in Holland and give them
to a Dutch Group. Posssibly, the head office of Aldi or Lidil? in the
UK could help. Perhaps, the Dutch embassy could give you phone number
for the local council or Chamber of Commerce who may be offer some
ideas.
Have a exciting abd safe trip.

Hm, sorry - problem solved - despite asking once already, they have now
come back again and said that a mistake was made in the communication of
the prices, and that indeed we can hire a table and 2 benches for â¬25!!!
Much more like it.
Just as well we decided not to ship our plastic things out this morning
then!
