Tesco Direct deliveries
Has anyone managed to get Tesco to deliver direct to a camp site? I seem
to recall some people had experienced difficulties. We are looking into
this for Summer Camp, it's in a farmer's field, not an official camp
site but there is a public road alongside.

Perhaps, if the farmer is willing, you could consider having it
delivered to the farmhouse?

We often have deliveries here at Tolmers, but sometimes Tesco will
refuse on the grounds that you're running a business (I know, but they
won't be argued with). It really helps though if you're an existing
customer.
Farmer's fields aside, if you're having a delivery to a busy campsite,
let them know it's coming in advance. We had one arrive at 3pm on
Friday just labelled James Smith or something like that, his mobile
was not turned on so we had no way of knowing whose it was :-(

To place an order you have to have a delivery postcode. When we camped
recently we used the farmer's postcode and then used the special
delivery instructions to tell the Tesco driver where we would meet him.
It worked well - except that there was no mobile coverage in the area we
were staying so someone had to sit and wait for Tesco to arrive.
Somehow Tesco can identify 'commercial' postcodes and will refuse to
deliver there.

Re: Tesco Direct deliveries
We've successfully had tesco to deliver to Walesby forest and to
Ashfield District camp site too (Nottinghamshire), although trying to
deliver to Aldwark (Central Yorkshire Canoeing centre) was a no no,
but we thought it was due to the toll bridge rather than the location
itself!
And for those who know it, at one point (don't know if they do it now)
they said they would deliver to Hag Dyke!!!!!
(1.25 miles up great whernside on a 4x4 track in one of those
lorries?!?!?!?)

I tried to get them to deliver to Waddecar for our Summer Camp, but they
said the nearest Tesco was too small and couldn't handle the large orders.
Am using Asda instead.

Further to that, what I did suggest many years ago when Internet
shopping was in its infancy was that we linked our site website to
Tesco so that campers could go through it from ours (as their HQ is
quite close by) and place their orders to have them at the site. All
this would have added convenience for the leaders.

Hmmm. Whilst I accept that supermarkets are a fact of life I cannot
help but wonder if they are beneficial to society.
They supply a wide range of ostensibly cheap goods from around the
world. I know from bitter experience that they will take on new lines
and sell at a lower than normal costs until local competition is wiped
out, and then they will raise the price to a more realistic level.
They ostensibly supply better quality goods than the smaller high
street shops ever did. Do they? Butcher meat from the supermarkets is
certainly of a lower quality than that I can buy at the market. The
same can be said about fish. Poultry, well we have all seen Hugh
Fearnly Whittingstall's campaign against factory farmed produce, and
if we haven't maybe we should make a point of finding out about it.
They make suppliers take additives out of food. Wow, that's generous
of them, who made the suppliers put the additives in there in the
first place?
They employ lots of staff and bring employment to an area. They do
indeed, but at the same time they manage by their arrival to shut down
every butcher, greengrocer and fishmonger in town. Where previously
maybe five or six butchers employed up to 30 skilled fleshers the
Supermarket that has replaced them may only employ half as many, if
that. And skilled fishmonger? at a supermarket?
Then there is the issue of where their goods come from. Never mind the
pittance that they pay UK producers, they pay next to nothing to
farmers in the third world. Next time you buy roses for your other
half look at the country of origin. The farms that produce these
flowers - and other produce, rely on high levels of fertiliser, which
pollutes the local water table, and kills the fish and wildlife that
the locals used to rely on for food. Making them even more dependant
upon the farms which creates a downward spiral of decline in health
and prosperity.
Then there is the issue of how those roses got to the UK? By air
transport, of course. How thoughtful to show your consideration for a
loved one by encouraging a supermarket to sell cheap flowers, flown in
with a massive carbon footprint, from the third world where their
production is a source of pollution to the environment and a health
issue to the local inhabitants.
I visited a town without a big supermarket last weekend, it had a
bustling high street full of small shops selling everything you could
think of. By comparison somewhere like Wakefield or Huddersfield is
almost bereft of small shops and stores lie vacant in the shopping
streets and even in the shopping malls ( yet though Wakefield's Riding
Centre cannot fill its empty stores the town has given the go-ahead
for a second chain store mall.
I'm pretty damned sure that if the local butcher or grocer was given a
large order they would give a discount to Scouts, and many would
deliver too. And most of the money would stay in the local economy,
unlike profits at the chain stores and supermarkets which end up being
siphoned off to faceless shareholders without any interest in the
local community.
Sorry, rant over. And, yes, mea cupla, I do buy some supplies from the
supermarkets, but we do use the market for meat and fish. We did try
the local baker for bread but unfortunately the packaging wasn't up to
camp storage.

My Explorers managed to get pizza deliveries to a greenfield site.
It probably helped that it was paid in advance.
Probably best to call Tesco Direct and talk to someone about it.
