Maggot
OK where do we start?
How about with the jokes? I think I've heard em all, but there may be
some new ones....
My CX500 Eurosport has been dry stored for the last 18 years,my dad has
managed to destroy the top of the right front fork top, but apart from
that it's still in one piece. Where does the panel suggest i start to
uncocoon apart from the obvious plugs, oil, filter , carbs etc...?

I think I'd start with "You are bidding on...".

Crikey. Well, I've no personal regard for CX500s - I always hated
them bak in the 80s. But lots of people didn't, and if yours was in
good condition when you put it away, and hasn't corroded too much in
storage, then it could be worth proper money my now.
The key thing is - did you drain the carbs before you stored it? If
not, then they wll be horribly gunged up up with the varnish like
stuff that petrol leaves behind when it evaporates in small places.
Potentially the carbs cab be recovered with ultrasonic cleaning, but
you have to strip them.
Otherwise - I'd just try and see if it will go. It ought to have new
oil and filter before you ride it around, but I wouldn't do that
before I got it started. It's definitely going to need a new battery,
and you should drain the tank (if not already done) and give it a good
head of fresh new fuel, and see what happens.
If you get it started, then you should change the oil and filter. And
also check the tyres - they've probably perished a bit too, and
anyway, tyres have come on a *lot* in 20 years.
Keep us posted...

That I doubt this Silver Wing hasn't got any bids at £780

Of course I didn't. I parked it up after the 1991? "Unsatisfied Virgins
Rally ( Too Drunk to fuck)" and then my son was born, 1 month turned
into 10 into a year, into years, into a decade etc.....

Hmm brand new set of RoadRunners less than 100 miles on em, but 18 years
of plastomer leaching has probably made them as hard as a hard wooden thing

As Champ says, but also look out for water on top of the crankcase
behind the cylinders after getting it running and for a few weeks
afterwards: the water pump mechanical seal might not like being left
un-turned for such a long time - they always were a weak spot on CX's.
This is just a precaution, BTW; Ive' no experience of a CX motor
that's been left that long.

Yeah but the Silver Wing was considered horrible even by people who
liked CX500s. I think the Eurosport was much more popular.
I'd be interested in TOG's view on this.

Indeed, I had a maggot in about 1984 and tried a mate's Silver Wing. It
was vile.

I nearly bid on that, actually, and then I thought: "Why? It's a Gold
Wing powered by a 500cc engine?"
The 650 might be worth considering, but it's ultra-rare. The 500 is just
a helluva lot of bike being pushed fitfully along by not much engine, a
bit like a BMW R45 with an RT fairing.

The CX650E really wasn't a bad bike in the day. I can't recall if the
camchain weakness persisted from the 500. Front end/brakes were
reasonable for the day and I liked those wheels.

Vibrated more than the 500

It didn't, in fact the camchain problem was restricted to the early 500s

I actually meant - what's your view on a CX500 Eurosport that's been
decently stored for 18 years? Would it be worth money?
