God give me strength... K1100 MOT
So, am off for a few days shortly and for one reason and another only
got around to the MOT on the last possible day before I go. Well there
was always today but my MOT tester of choice doesn't really work on
Saturdays.
Turned up. He sucked his teeth (as always...) about the play in the
handlebars "They all do that, anti-vibration design..."
At the end he said sorry, can't pass it; no brake lights. Checked the
bulb, nothing wrong. Said he could, probably, look at it later if I
could fix it in about 2 hours. Sadly I had a conference call I needed
to attend... But still, I'm good at multi-tasking...
Unfortunately I don't have a K1100 manual. So no wiring diagram. The
K1100 has a bulb failure indicator and I'd noticed that the red triangle
wasn't lighting. So I thought the 'box' that does this would be at
fault: part of fairing off, seat off, tank off. Check connections and
replace with unit of unknown state. Still no good. Check unit on K75
in garage - working. Strip K75 to pull unit out. Put this in K1100;
STILL NOT WORKING. Supress urge to shout (since I'm on a conference
call).
Start bypassing unit with a relay got the rear light working but the
brake switches just don't seem to work. Check the at the actual switch
and they're fine. At the junction to the 'bulb sensor' they aren't.
Check loom for damage. None visible.
It starts to rain. Push bike into garage and put on centre stand.
Suddenly it's working. Strange. Remove relay and plug in bulb sensor.
All OK. Shake wiring loom. Still OK. Replace body work and finish
conference call.
Take bike back to shop. Park outside, on side stand. Check before I go
in. FUCK... not working. Move bike put on centre stand, check again.
It's fine... wait a minute... kick down side stand... stops working.
OH FOR FUCKS SAKE. The side stand switch kills the brake light circuit
together with the ignition.
Pass.
You live and you learn; I've owned this bike for four years and various
other (five I think) K series bikes over the last eight years...

Filed for future reference. I'm glad it wasn't me that had to learn this
the hard way.
That said, I invariably use the centre stand on the LT.

Oh, me too; except for when I'm in a hurry or only stopping for 5-10
minutes.
Bit of a waste of time really.

TBF I never knew that either. It doesn't seem quite right to me TBH.

Well, the sidestand switch and the engine kill switch have the same
effect on brake lights and both kill the engine. However you can spin
the engine with the kill switch at "off" but not with the sidestand
down. Strange.
Still conventional wisdom is not to use the sidestand or run bike on
sidestand anyway (on a K series bike).

I though they pegged the rings on later[1] models?

They did, ISTR about the same time as they moved the passenger handrails to
the seat cowl away from the seat

Ah. Did it actuall work? I can recall parking in a layby for five
minutes on the sidestand on my '86 8V, and departing in a cloud of
smoke that would make an LC racer proud.

I never found it an issue on my later K's, using Mobil 1 also drastically
reduced any smoke on the flat fours.

Yeah it was only the very early K's that had a bad problem with oil passing
the rings and like R100's oil choice matters.
Lets face it, on a K1100 Shane who lurks here had maybe 8 to 12 litres of
engine oil poured in and the fucker still ran!
I vividly remember it draining into a good size kitchen basin, going over
and maybe 4 litres of oil running down a new tarmac driveway.

Jeepers!
My neighbours K100 at 237,000 is the highest mileage I've seen on a bike,
impressive if for only that it survived his mechanical fuckwittery
(molegrips were the tool of choice for most of his usage)

I think I saw a K100 which had reportedly done 400-ish k.
I don't think there is any doubt that a Rev2 K100 short engine is good
for that. Some of the ancillary items would need replacing rather often
though!
