Anybody got a series A Vincent rapide?
If so I should get it sold at a classic auction. One went for £240,000
at auction. Not bad since even Vincent admitted it was not a success.
The clutch could not handle the power and if you fixed that the gearbox
tended to give up (according to an approved history of Vincent). Then of
course it was not known as the plumbers nightmare for nothing.

I don't think the model names ever appeared on a Vincent, and I'd
happily change my name in return for a series A Rapide.

Or a Zenith.

Actually, I've always had a sneaking admiration for the 600 sloper Panther.
Proper "one-bang-per-lamp-post" job that is.

As did the 3 cylinder Excelsior. Dunno what they were like to own or ride,
but the sound effects were magnificent.

Apparently, until some reviewer of the first GL1000 said "first since the
Wooler", Honda thought they'd produced the first ever H/O four.

I saw a Sunbeam S7 with a Porsche 356 engine at Stafford a few years ago. I
imagine the final drive lasted several minutes...

Bad research then - Zündapp built a H/O 4 before WWII (the K
800). Brutally expensive when new and thus not exactly a resounding
success.

Given that that's about as long as they were supposed to last with the
blistering, tyre shredding original lump, I'm surprised it would be
that long, TBH.

Very attractive bikes though; a former girlfriend's brother owned an
S8 (I think it was a bit of a hybrid, actually). Final drive was OK
but it lunched its dynamo instead, so I never saw it running.

Drag Waye had a HO4 Volkswagen engine, and someone in the '60s put a VW
engine in a slightly lengthened Dragonfly frame.

TAAAW, there's a 'Doublefly', though this was only recently cannibalised.

Me, I've always had a yen for a Douglas Dragonfly.

Never ridden one. Never really looked at one close-up'n'personal.

But always wanted one.

Re: Anybody got a series A Vincent rapide?
On the 1300cc flat four engine of the type fitted to Porsche 356
Speedster, but fitted to a Sunbeam, you may like to look at this page

http://www.onthebeam.co.uk/Specials.html

(PS. To be fair on this motorcycle there is not a lot of Sunbeam left
to be able to call it a Sunbeam)

Though it's been around a long time, and still on same rear drive!

The rear drive 'weak point' is made up by Sunbeam owners trying to
keep all the Sunbeams to themselves!

Nice handling bike, but *MUCH* better if you replace the Earles forks
with the Radiadraulic short leading link ones from the T35 Mk series.

However, it reduces the turning-circle somewhat.

Ar.

Now, I'd like an Endeavour, or any of the Mk series, especially a 'Plus'.
