Skye
Just returned from Skye. Flip me, what a nice place! Lovely roads, hardly
any traffic, long sweeping bends and short twisty sections separated by
straights long enough to nip past any slower vehicles, wonderful scenery...
pity I had to take the car and couldn't do it on two wheels!

Nice indeed. Only this evening we were discussing perhaps hitting the
west coast generally some time next year - pre- or post-midges.

We went to Mull this summer. Fantastic place as well. The roads are a
bit crap though. There are only two bits of non "single lane with
passing places" on the whole island [1].
I've never seen such clear sea water, you could pick the crab you
wanted to catch in 20 foot of water. Golden eagles, ospreys, otters,
red deer and more buzzards than you could shake a stick at.

Definitily better on two wheels - The Road To The Isles is pretty fun

I agree 100% about the first 2 (especially Luton, which in any sane
society would have been nuked some time ago), but I really enjoyed the
time I spent in Swindon.
Nice people. Horrible town centre. Nice estates out of town. Great
mates. Lovely biking roads in close proximity.

Well I suppose France isn't /that/ far away. Swindon would be a lot
better if they'd build a motorway to the south coast.

Yebbut didn't you move to Newport then Leeds after Swindon? In which
case yes, I can see how you'd have fond memories of the place I'm glad

Newport is, if anything, even worse than Luton, and Leeds is ... well
Leeds isn't as bad as Newport or Luton, but I wouldn't live there again,
ever, for any reason.
But I had a really nice time in Swindon. Maybe I just met lots of nice
people? But they all seemed so pleasant and friendly, and there are
smashing places to ride nearby, as well as eat & drink, so I was pretty
happy there. Again, I offer my sincere apologies.

That does look quite spiffing. I keep thinking I must do the Scotland
thing one day, but then I remember the south of France is closer & has
guaranteed weather, & come to my senses.

I went there for the weekend that included the summer equinox in the
early 90s (before they built the bridge), and I concur - a magical
place.
Did you go to the Armadale Castle in the north? They had a fantastic
exhibition about St Kilda when I was there, with a whole bunch of
photos from the 1930s, just before the islands were evacuated.

Well, yeah, but there is something about Scotland which really is
wonderful, and can't just be reduced to an assessment of the weather.
Put it this way - even in shit weather the highlands look
breathtaking.
I must get up there on a bike again myself.

You're clearly less nesh than I.
A worrying concept at the best of times.
I did enjoy biking there, but the rain was a total pain at times, and I
mean a total pain.

I meant specifically the Scotland /bike/ thing. I've been there a
couple of times as a car-mounted tourist, & agree it's pretty stunning.
However it also rained virtually constantly for two weeks solid the
last time, so too much of a risk for a scratching holiday (unless it's
midge bites you want to scratch).

Which is why we'll wait until the forecast is for a few days of
sunshine and then head straight off. We can be in Tarbet by lunchtime.

I'd be more likely to do it if I lived closer, but as it is, the rather
fantastic roads around Clermont-Ferrand or the Black Forest are about
the same distance from here. I could probably even get to the foothills
of the Pyrenees in the same time it would take me to get to Tarbet.

This site has a rather fun slideshow showing the road. Hairy.

Lovely.
The first time I went up across the pass I travelled in the opposite
direction. We climbed out of the village through much thicker cloud than
shown in that slideshow. Just as I was getting a little anxious we emerged
into bright sunshine to get lovely views at the top, over to Skye. The
descent on the other side was largely clear too.
When we got back down to sea level at Tornapress we looked back towards the
top of the pass. Seeing the top of the mountain sticking out through a
layer of cloud was quite surreal. This predated digital cameras and I've
mislaid the prints, unfortunately.

Except it didn't show the hairpins, the hairiest bit of all.

Yep. Actually they don't look so bad, compared to some I've come
across more recently. I must be better at hairpins than I was.

Especially on an R6 with the turning circle of an oil tanker. My road
positioning was very carefully thought out going down those. It only just
made it.

You don't live that much further away than me and I used to finish
work on a Friday, drive through the night, go ice climbing on the
Saturday, sleep half way up Ben Nevis, go ice climbing on the Sunday
and then drive back overnight for work on Monday morning.
Admittedly the driving was always shared between 3 or 4 of us so we'd
get a bit of sleep during the journey and we could do it in about 8
hours if we only stopped for fuel so we'd be there by 2am then we'd
usually throw a couple of tents up on the golf course at Fort William
and sleep until 6am before setting off up the hill.
Being skint and still finding ways to do what you want to is a lot
more satisfying than just hosing money at it but you don't realise it
when you're trying to sleep in a car and someone else is snoring as
only a pissed up person can snore.
