The sun was shining...
... So all right thinking middle-aged men drag a SOBoxer out of the
garage and tinker.

All was going well until I got to the starting up bit. Long story short,
the battery is totally dead so I jump started it from the P5. The boxer
was rather reluctant to turn over.

I removed the plugs and tried again and the engine turned over
beautifully. Plugs back in, not interested. The jump leads are pretty
decent, and I'm surprised that a battery that happily spins a 3.5 litre
V8 should struggle with a 0.65 litre flat 2.

What I don't know is what the effect would be of having a totally
shagged battery in circuit. Any thoughts if I'd be likely to get a
better result if I took the battery out and connected the leads directly
to the wiring loom? I could just go buy another battery just to try it,
but as they are somewhat pricey I'd rather not until I know it's going
to start and run nicely

I'd give disconnecting the battery in the bike a try - depending on how
flat it is, it probably tries to charge itself from the P5 battery, not
leaving much current for the starter motor.

Doesn't stop me starting up SWMBO's CB250 occasionally with jump leads,
or even the Tart when it had an undeniably utterly borked battery.

I suspect an earthing or main feed lead problem. Are you connecting the
earth jump lead to the battery terminal or direct to the frame ?

You could try just disconnecting the battery and hooking up your jump
leads direct to the battery connections to confirm their integrity.

I was connecting to the battery, should have gone to the frame directly
I guess.

It's a plan. Next time it's sunny, that's what I'll do
