heh. My postal vote is already registered.

However, on the subject of the BNP, I don't think 'mobilisation' is
really the best way of dealing with them - I think it gives their
views a seriousness that they wouldn't otherwise garner. And, on the
semantic point, I think they are a 'legitimate' party - one that holds
views massively removed from mine, but views that I think a human
being ought to be 'allowed' to hold.

I find myself in agreement with you.

I'm not entirely sure which of us should be more worried.

<thinks>

It's you. You should be more worried.

PS: from what I've read in several places, the best answer to the BNP
seems to be "elect one of them" - they seem to do a truly awful job once
elected to local council, and usually get punted out the next time
round.

I've read a few press articles that give the same impression - some of
the elected councilors are unable to understand what their roles are.
This probably says a lot about the caliber of person prepared to stand
on a BNP ticket.

Indeed so. I'm trying to recall the superb article on the subject
Private Eye ran a few years ago - I have it in mind it was written by
Paul Foot, BICBW.

It was a listing of the 20 or so BNP councillors, country-wide, their
performance and attendance records, and any details on massive cock-ups
they'd been part of (plenty). It was a litany of total incompetence.
The words "pissup" and "brewery" sprang to mind.

They also tend to be frozen out completely by the other parties,
regardless of whether they're Labour, Tory or Lib-Dem, on the very
reasonable grounds that no party in their right mind wants to be seen
anywhere near them, in the council chamber, or in policy terms. Even
the die-hard, Tory, "hang-em-high", blue-rinse brigade seemed to clock
this in seconds flat.

Oh, and the one overriding lesson that came out of said article was
that, while extremists seem capable of the brief burst of action and
enthusiasm required to get elected, they're actually fucking lazy
bastards, to a man, over the long haul, and the day-in, day-out graft
required to make a sustained good impression at local level is wholly
beyond them.

I think you have it in a nutshell there why communism leads to entropy
and collapse.

I can't quite explain why National Socialism was so successful but I
expect it was:

a) the Germans will succeed regardless of the political system
b) vast amounts of slave labour

You seem to have a different definition of success from me - one that
includes:
- only being in power for 12 years
- driving a huge number of scientists and intellectuals abroad
- leaving one's country split in two for 40 years
- killing millions upon millions of people

There is a current version of exactly this tactic going with the greater
london assembly. One BNP assembly member was elected in May (Richard
Barnbrook) and he has been consistently ignored by every other assembly
member and Boris. The biggest hoot is that he usually sits beside the
Conservative member for Bexley and Bromley (James Cleverly) who is
young, intelligent and black (now there's a change in stereotypes). To
say that the Tory member has zero time for the BNP chap is a gross
understatement. Video recordings of assembly meetings are a hoot to
watch.

He's lined up Broon as the patsy, and I imagine he's also got a few

heh. On the one hand I feel it's slightly unfair and high-handed that
larger sections of elected representatives should effectively gang up on
a minority party, but on the other hand the BNP are a bunch of cunts, so
fuck them and the horse they rode in on.

Are the chamber meetings broadcast anywhere? Or available for download?

Probably worth focusing on Mayor's Question Time for June or July as I
think that's the particular meeting (rather than any other committee) I
saw.

You need to disable the "fascist cunt" filter.

I posted one a couple of years or so back about how shit they were,
can't recall who wrote it. It did include such gems about how one
naughty council got the poor old bamboozled BNP councillor to vote in
favour of something that was anti-BNP (or maybe only him, can't
remember now) by just adding it on to the end of some other matter. He
did ask for it though, it seemed to be an occasion of note if any of
them turned up at all. I wonder how many of them are still councillors
now.
