[OT] Paging the doctors
I've just got back from Prague where they've had an outbreak of Hep A.
I'm vaccinated against some form of Hep (I _think_ it's B but can't be
sure).
Would this vaccination cover me for Hep A too?

Hep A is one shot, B is three spread out over 6 months, followed by a
blood test and another shot if you're unlucky enough for the first
three not to have been fully successful - just had these done.

Not as far as I am aware, having paid[1] £184 for my hep B shots it
would be a bummer if the free hep A covered it ;-)
[1] When I say paid I mean my employer has paid.

Hep A is transmitted through contaminated food
Hep B is tramsmitted in bodily fluids
I'm guessing, but I reckon you have Hep A cover based on your past business
trips to the Middle East.

Ah, so it was Hep B I had. You can't be vaccinated against Hep C, can
you?

Heh, I got mine done for free. Isn't the French health system great.
:-) How long does it last for though? Any ideas?
I'll have to check about the Hep A though. Whilst the risk is very low,
I don't want to take the chance with the nippers.

Doubtful. Very doubtful. I know nothing of the vaccinations, but
they're very different diseases, caused by different viruses, so
unless there's a combined vaccine you'd not be protected.

(Ex-medical microbiologist, some 30 years out of date)
No. Hep A is relatively harmless (compared with B and C which are often
lethal). Six months off the piss IIRC. In those pre-AIDS days Hep B was
the most virulent and feared 'industrial disease' for us laboratory
workers. AIUI Hep B is still more virulent and a higher risk (from blood
samples and as an STD) than HIV.

Ta. However the warning I'd received said that it could be pretty dodgy
for the very young and very old, hence my concern for the kids. Based
on wessie's description of the two, I don't think I've got any cause
for concern.

Thanks for the info. I should be fine then.

It was actually for trips I'd made to Cameroon in the past. For the ME,
I was never recommended a Hep jab. Based on what Ian said up there
though, I'm pretty certain that it was Hep B (unless Hep A has the same
injection methods).
I'd only found my jab book recently. Now I've already lost the bloody
thing again, so can't check.

So what are the symptoms of Hep?
If I start developing excessive facial hair, polo neck jumpers and corduroy,
carrying a slim volume of Allen Ginsberg and listening to bebop,
does that mean I've got hep?

You can get Hep A/B which is Freeeee
If you've already had Hep A, then, in my case, Hep B is three
injections, first two a week apart, the third a fortnight later - it
cost £65
Hep A does not cover Hep B ... STS

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember Eiron saying
something like:

Some seem to be free others not, the charges vary from practice to
practice. Anyway it was free for me which is the bit that counts ;-).
Time I am not sure, I *think* it's around 10 years but best check.
Only say that because I've had a whole load redone in the last 12
months - coinciding with my passport renewal.

Drink only beer and hot drinks, don't fuck any hookers without a
condom, sorted.
