(OT)(Blog) The 'Score' So Far .. .
... since Monday, nine hours of detention given out to five boys and
three girls. Two boys expelled from my class for gross insolence.

It's getting worse, people.

Sadly, so do the parents (like the mother who came to see me this
midday, because she wasn't happy at her daughter's being given a
punishment exercise, nor at the fact that her daughter, who had 'done
three years of English' before coming to our school, had to sit through
lessons with, 'my name is ...', or 'today is Tuesday...').

LOL ... rather funny, actually.

I was doing quite well as a Solaris admin, though. I wasn't the best,
but got by, and earned rather silly money. So I 'became a teacher' to
get out of the rat race, and to have four months of paid holiday a year.

I trust there isn't a more advanced class that she can attend? Like

That explains it then. Got a well paying job in a technology fast
becoming obsolete? Didn't manage to bail in time? Become a teacher.

I was a Solaris admin a couple of years back. As they messed around
with Solaris on x86, the performance to price ration of SPARC became a
joke and with the rise of Linux I bailed big time.

Not really. I've never been interested in being rich; which is why I
find the ostentatious boasting about personal wealth by some on UKRM,
quite simply pathetic. Money seems quite vulgar to me. My motivations
in 'doing' Solaris were that I was self-taught, starting with Linux when
it was still Red Hat 2.0, and I wanted to prove that I could become a
'UNIX admin'.

Well I did, and got bored with it after six months. But my SO at that
time liked the fact that with the dosh they were paying me, I could
whisk her off to Morocco or Mexico at the drop of a hat, so I kept at
it. And every morning, it got harder and harder to drag myself out of
bed. Eventually, it became obvious that I was a 'slave' to the money
that they were paying me, even though I didn't _want_ that money. So I
literally just packed it in, leaving the office on Friday evening, and
staying in bed on Monday morning. Enrolled at uni, did teacher
training, failed the exams first time around, took another shot at it,
and well ..

Now, I get four months paid holiday a year, I work eighteen hours (in
class; there are more hours involved in preparing classes) a week and
get paid as if I were working thirty-five. I cycle to work (or will,
when the cunts get around to fixing my bike), and am heading to Auxerre
with the bike and four fully loaded panniers to cycle back to Paris over
the holidays. My wage slips read, 'Ministère de l'Education nationale',
and I have a secure job for the remainder of my life (until retirement,
which by the time I get there, will probably be =~70). My wages are
probably, oh fuck I dunno, around a third of what they were? Yet every
morning without fail, my eyes open even before the alarm goes off, and I
fucking _bounce_ out of bed. I genuinely have absolutely _no_ idea how
much is in my account at the moment. There's enough. My half of the
rent is paid every month, the Internet bill is paid (SO pays the
electricity, which works out at around four or five euro less than I
pay, we have our mobile phones and VOIP comes with the modem), and when
I go to the hole in the wall, it spits out a couple of ten euro notes
when asked. The fridge has grub in it, I'm sitting swilling a Leffe and
listening to Joni Mitchell, and every night, I get to fall asleep next
to this _incredible_ bint who _exudes_ femininity, who's never raised
her voice in the entire time I've known her (and who, on the one
occasion when I did, told me gently but firmly, 'don't ever talk to me
that way again' (I haven't)), who is a doctor in political science and
who speaks five languages (and I mean 'speaks', not 'can order a beer
and ask where the train station is'). We don't have a car, and do not
want one.

The downside of the job is that I spend more and more time punishing,
instead of teaching, but as long as there are moments like today's, when
after forty minutes of leading my 'cinquième' (=~ 12 years old) through
examples like 'Sarah's book', 'Sophie's book' and 'the girls' books', I
ask them to explain what the rule on apostrophe-s is, and there is a
fuckin' _sea_ of raised hands before me, eager to answer, and breathed,
'm'sieur, m'sieur, je sais, moi!!' ...

I _live_ for moments like that.

Anyway, I'm drunk, now.

So that little 'bloggy' outburst was to say no, I didn't 'bail'. I made
a conscious decision not to spend the rest of my working life making
some cunt or cunts rich whilst I stared at my reflection on a black
console. And you know, in the staffroom, if I try to recall the
conversations with colleagues, there isn't a single conversation about
money, or about a new Volvo T-65 or whatever the fuck they're called.

I am blessed.

Solaris is (AFAIK) still pretty big, at least over here. One of my last
posts was with Nortel, and they had .. what are they again, V890s ?
Then again, they've got money to burn. Good luck to 'em. I will never
again go back.

On the other side, last night at the fireworks festival some clumsy tourists

Well, no. Just another manifestation of the silly idea that most people
have that 'those who can, do. Those who can't, teach'.

I'd be interested in knowing how someone teaches something he can't do.
