OT: Laptop hd caddy
If one was to acquire a 160Gb laptop hd, from an Acer Aspire 5610Z, which
one wanted to use as a USB storage device, what kind of caddy would one be
looking for on ebay? One I just looked at said up to 40gb only and another
said it was for 80 pin SCA drives and then my eyes glazed over.
Would this be the kind of thingy?

I got one of those for me old internal drive out of my MacBook, although
it's SATA, it's a good little box, very cheap, and seems to just work. I
even have my plugged in as a NAS with my Airport Extreme.

That's a point, I don't even know if it's IDE or SATA. This will have to be
investigated.

That would be a good thing to know ;-)

Well bugger me, that changes things somewhat. It's a 120Gb SATA drive, not a
160Gb IDE drive.
I will have to go re-ebaying.
For something like this, or indeed this:

Yes, that's the same box with SATA instead. I have a 120GB SATA drive in
my enclosure too.
Just be wary that some of the bus powered caddies can overload the USB
port - a direct connection to my MacBook causes the USB port to shut off
after a while (OK after a reset though). Using a powered hub resolved
this.

Righto, ta, I'll watch out for that.
