Garage Night Episode 7: Changing a chain and sprockets - watch now!
We have put out another episode of our web video show about working on
bikes.

Trent and Pete are back from Mountain Madness in the Spanish Pyrenees
and Pete's KTM needs a new chain and sprockets (it even spat out some
rollers - nasty!).

Watch here: http://www.garagenight.tv/?p=14

All the best,

They are things that proper motorcycles have.

It's a fairly useful invention for transmitting power from an engine to a
rear wheel of a motorcycle. It allows for properly working suspension, you
can put some shock absorbing device into the wheel which makes on/off power
jerks way smoother, and you can tighten them properly for low freeplay,
which smoothes this thing even further. Add to that low unsprung mass,
fairly neutral behavior under power and high strength and you'll want it
yourself.

Unfortunately none of those is capable of using this recent improvement.
They have their engine put in wrongly, so it won't work. Try a BMW with a
proper motorcycle engine and you'll find they make use of chain and
sprockets to their full advantage.

IIRC a tiny little chain helped open the throttles on the /6 models.
Hence the favourite m/c club night quiz question of the era - how many
chains on a BMW?

They only need one chain attached to them, the other end can be
tethered to a boat to keep it from being swept away.

What! You've never seen a BMW Trailie on one wheel?
They're not fast but they're quick. Don't you have capable riders in your
neck of the woods?
