I get up at six, leave home at 6.30 to catch the 6.51 train to be in
the office for 8.15 (Hammersmith).
I leave the office at 5, on the 6.00 train and home by seven.
Fridays are great though, cos I've done enough hours during the week I
leave at 3 and home by before five.
it almost seems civilised.
Thank god we're moving to Hatfield next year, not sure I could do that
commute full time[1] though I guess you get used to it.
weekly train ticket is £100. week parking at the station £27.50
[1] only do it every other week at the mo.

Hmm... well I'm *probably* being shifted to Paddington.
Which I think will mean two hours each way by the time I factor in
driving to the station.
>weekly train ticket is £100. week parking at the station £27.50
Annual season ticket about 8,500... parking about 35 quid.
Think I *might* be using the bike and working at home a fair amount.
Fuck spending that much on a train ticket when I know I'll be standing
for at least one of the 90minute journeys.

Not sure if the trains out from Paddington or the M4 are worse. IME it's
probably the M4 but I don't go out that way very often.

Well, the trains are shit; use them a couple of times a month.
The M4 going east in the morning is hell after about J8/9 (depending
on the time.) And then there's the approach to Paddington- not sure
whether north circular and then A40 is the best way.
But the 8 and a bit grand season ticket or 130 quid daily return
probably will persuade me to use a bike. Maybe bike to Heathrow T1
and then Heathrow Express or to Osterley tube and then take the
Bakerloo.

Which doesn't run from Osterley...

I did have to go out Reading way a few times recently and they didn't
strike me as too bad, but crowded they were. The ones I was on were at
least somewhat better than the sardine tins they use down here.

The stretch of the North Circ between the M4 and Hanger Lane gyratory
blows dead goats, even on a bike. Massively crowded pretty much any time
of day and a lot of it isn't dual carriageway. I've been doing the North
Finchley -> Heathrow trip quite often and this is the worst route you
can take.
Use the A312 instead to cross over to the A40 instead. I would avoid the
A4 unless the A40 in is even worse and I find that hard to imagine.

You'll probably end up doing what I do - take the bike most of the time
but if you're too knackered or your waterproofs are still soaked, take
the train instead. I'd also investigate what parking is like around the
area the office is in, it might be that you'll have to be there at
stupid o'clock in the morning to get a space and/or pay. It's obviously
worse inside the congestion charging zone, but in the City you'll be
lucky to find a space in a bike parking bay at 7.30am. Used to be around
8-8.15 but that's the congestion charge for you.

For me, 45 mins each way (an hour+ in car) was fine, even after 3 years I
was happy doing it.
Going upto 1.30 each way was just too much, it went from no extra
tiredness, plenty of free time to do what I wanted, to constantly tired and
no free time, or rather no energy hence needing to go to bed early.
I suppose everyones got their own commuting limit which you could do for a
year or so before it ground you down, mine seems to be 2 hours a day.

Mine's lessened over the years, particularly since I moved out of the
on-site consultancy work. It used to be I was comfortable doing a
couple of hours each way, now anything over 30 minutes seems like a
bit of a trek.
