"10 items or less" includes exactly 10 items. Does "up to 10 items"?

Because "children up to the age of 10 eat free" doesn't include 10 year
olds!

Why not word it properly and saw "10 items or fewer" as they say in
the article?
That sign always made me go all Radio 4.

Because ten-year-olds are over ten years of age.

Well that's not always true.

I was born at 10am, so on the day of my 10th birthday, I wasn't 10 years of
age until 10am. However, I was 10 years old from midnight 10 hours earlier.

In the sense that businesses and government departments are having to
'dumb down' their message across the board, as education standards
plummet and people are more concerned with a new iPhone than with
'boring' stuff like whether 'it's' takes an apostrophe and when, or
whether countable nouns are 'less' or 'fewer' when there are, erm..
fewer of them.

That will be next month's press release, after conducting a customer
survey, which requested the "10 items or fewer" sign.

They can start working on Orange and their "Racoon" tariff next.

Along similar lines I emailed Dettol a while ago pointing out that they'd
used the phrase "one bacteria" in their latest TV ad.

They replied: "We are aware that the correct description for a single
unicellular prokaryotic organism, which reproduces by cell division, should
be "one bacterium". It was felt however that it would be more appropriate
to use the word "bacteria" as bacteria is a term that more people can relate
to and more commonly used."

I suppose no-one ever got sacked for overestimating the stupidity of their
own customers.

Indeed. The ASA were uninterested in my comments on the "contains no
chemicals" claim for a so-called "organic" fertiliser. Odd, they reckon
to ensure that adverts are truthful.

Hah!
