That's roughly what I did for quite a few years. There were times when
I'd get the 0642, but only because it was an intercity train, rather
than the fuck-awful new commuter jobbies on the Northampton service.
And it would (in theory, and for the first year or three I was using
it) only take about 35 minutes for the journey, as opposed to closer
to an hour for most of the other trains, many of which had one or more
stops en-route.
But in practise it'd be rare to get back home much before 1930, so
it's still a 12-hour day, and a soul-sapping one at that. I wouldn;'t
do it now, regardless of the money.

I bloody HATE London.
I had a short contract in "The City"[1] about 5 years ago, Up at 6 to get
the 6.50 from Yatton to Paddington, Arrive Paddington at 8.55, nasty looks
from everyone wandering into the office around 9.15. The only earlier train
left at around 4.30. Get home just after 8 PM. UKP 145 per bloody day
train fare because the train started in Penzance so first class was the
only way to get a seat and I am NOT standing all the damn way.
As luck would have it the next contract was in Amsterdam.
Leave home a few minutes later, KLM from BRS - AMS, taxi to the office,
arrive just before 9. Get home 7.45. Fare UKP 95 per day plus around
another 10 for the taxi. And they paid more.
Which would you rather do ?.
[1] Why do the smug cnuts always refer to it as The City, there are a few
dozen cities in the UK, what makes them so bloody special.

Which does not explain when they refer to it as THE city in the assumption
that I know which bloody city they are referring to.
To me, the city refers to Bristol because it is the nearest one.
Around here if you hear someone say "The City" they are most likely
talking about Bristol City football club.
Do they even believe that anything exists west of Slough or north of
Watford ?.

As usual, you miss the point by a country mile. People use "The City"
to refer to a very specific area of London populated mainly by large
financial institutions (and it can also become a synonym for working
therein). You, being just 20 minutes from Paddington, were not working
in The City at all.
