OT : Paging those thinking of buying a laptoplette
PC World are advertising this:-
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/editorial/advent-netbook/?int=home-1
on sale from Monday.
Its exactly the same as the MSI Wind
http://www.expansys.com/c.aspx?f=1468
but £83 cheaper.
<cancels order from Expansys>
Makes the Asus EEE 901 look overpriced :)

Now I'm even more confused, the full specs on the PC World site state:
"...it features the easy to use Genuine Windows Vista (R) XP operating
system..."
Never seen Windows Vista XP before...

'snot.
Click the Info button (left of Add) then go to 'View full product
information' and it lists it as "Genuine Windows Vista (R) XP"
clicking on the Geniune Windows Vista (R) XP link links to a page with
the Windows Vista logo on it and details about Genuine Windoze.

I'm quite interested in this laptopette (subnotebook?) but can't find
the battery life details - unless it's just a rebadged MSI Wind? IN
which case it's either 2.5 hrs or 5.5 hrs depending on which battery
it ships with!
I bought a new Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Li 1818[1] lapdog in September
for £499 or something similar but it's so fucking huge and the battery
life is pitiful (about 40 minutes) that I hardly use it. Having it on
ones lap isn't really possible as the vents and fans are all placed
direclty where legs and knees live meaning using it on the lap blocks
them all up and it gets rather warm. The Amilo has reasonable
specs[2] but it's a desktop computer squeezed into a laptop.
My old Dell had 8 hours life unplugged when using the main battery +
the media bay battery as I hardly ever used the CD/DVD writer so the
large battery just went in the slot instead.

Ah, I didn't have the energy to go that far. I just checked the URL.
Anyway, LITSTPRTI.

It comes with XP, PC World are idiots. But idiots who sell nice dirt
cheap notebooks before anyone else does.

It is.
Have a read on www.msiwind.net , they've compared the two and they're
exactly the same, bar case colours.

It's the only thing putting me off too -
http://www.mobilecomputermag.co.uk/20080702639/msi-wind-u100/page-3.html
Scroll down to the bottom, and you can see, it's pretty poor for something
like that. And also note -
"MSI announced a few weeks ago that the Wind would ship with a 2200mAh
battery rather than the original 5200mAh one we saw in the prototype
model.
This is obviously disappointing, since the prototype had a battery life of
several hours (at least according to Windows' own estimate - we weren't
able
to test it) and that made for a very versatile laptop."
So, hmmm....

I think after having a nice sized Dell Inspiron made to my specs a few
years ago and then getting an off the shelf Fujitsu which was cheaper
I preferred the Dell, if only for the battery life.
The Fujitsu us huge and too big for a lap, and one can't place it on
the lap properly without clogging up the air vents with leg. My next
laptop will be something the size of that MSI Wind or their rebadged
ones, if not slightly larger and the main selling point of whatever I
buy will be BATTERY LIFE.

Global shortage of LiIon batteries thanks to Sonys and other exploding
ones.
Its a bit disappointing they haven't said they're doing a free battery
replacement when they do start shipping the 6 cell ones (but that seems
to be the UK norm :( ), but the dosh I'm saving buying the Advent
badged one from PC World will pay for the 6 cell battery when it comes
out.

My home lappy is a Dell Latitude D530 and the battery lasts about 3-4 hours
active use, with the wifi enabled.
My work lappy is a Dell Latitude D620 and I'm lucky of the battery lasts 45
minutes, even with wifi disabled.
Both screens are the same width but the D530 is 4:3 whereas the D620 is 16:9
and therefore smaller area.
Our Helpdesk tells my there's nothing wrong with either the D620 or it's
battery, so it must just be pants.

In comparison to lighting a screen, I bet WiFi on/off makes fuck all
difference.

Same as my Fujitsu. My old Dell had a "matte" 4:3 screen, this new
one has a really bright glossy 16:9 thing - must take up most of the
power.

My Inspiron had the normal battery and then a 'media bay' battery
which used to go where the DVDRom went, with both in and fully charged
I was well away.

I have a Dell Latitude D410 here - standard light weight battery gives over
4 hours, and it was capable of 7 on the big 9 cell, but that had the slight
downside of sticking out of the front of the laptop, making it an inch
bigger - although it did work as a wristrest a little bit heh.
Anyway, it's still reasonably good even today (it's just over 2 years old -
still has almost a year of the onsite warranty left heh!), everything works
perfectly on XP, still nice and fast, runs WoW perfectly hehe ;-) 1.86ghz
Centrino (Intel Pentium M 750 I think it is), 2gb DDR2, 80gb 7,200rpm HD,
bluetooth, wifi of course, the only really shite component been the shared
Intel GFX - I'd have liked TV out, the only output is VGA monitor out.
Also, it's not one of the upgrade Dell screens, and only goes to 1024x768,
which is pretty lame these days. The DVDRW drive is in a little caddy that
plugs into it, but I only really use that when I need to install something.
Originally only had 512 RAM, including the128mb shared with the GFX, so you
can probably appreciate it was a bit sluggish running WoW - was ok most of
the time, but entering Stormwind and bit like that it really struggled. So,
2gb of DDR2 from HK via ebay for about £60 (this was a year ago) and it was
bang on. Then the HD started having the odd hiccup, so I had it replaced
under the warranty before it had a chance to die, and sold the replacement
on ebay, buying myself an 80gb 7,200rpm replacement for it. After I'd sold
the replacement from Dell, with the Dell cradle bit (I kept the one from my
other drive), upgrading to 80gb 7,200rpm gained me about a tenner heh! I
think it was Hog was it, that has a D410 and really rates it too.
I keep nearly upgrading it with an M1330, a powerful one, but I keep
thinking that really, it does absolutely everything I need, and it's still
very small with great battery.

The past week I've been using two Dells and my Sony laptop.
I think ones a Dell Latitude 620, the other a Dell Inspiron 1150.
The 1150 is about 1/10th the speed of the 620, with about 1/10th the
battery life. Really is pathetic.
The new XPS 1710s C2Ds are quicker and smoother running 3D stuff than
the Dell quad core desktops too.
