Self Converting Motorhomes
Hi all,
I am thinking of converting my transit into a motorhome myself. Has anybody
done this themselves?
If so have you got any does and donts that will help me.
Also has anyone had any problems when insuring a self converted motorhome?
I am just concerned that I will not get insurance for it after I have
converted it.
Thanks
Neil

It may be more complicated but is it better?

hugh's recommendation is sound ! its what i'd do so that you know
the base vehicle is acceptable to the insurance company and that approx
cost of the insurance.
a friend was going to buy an ambulance and convert it, and was told by
the insurance company that it was possible, and given the minimum
requirements
of what it would need to be considered a camper van, i.e. it was to have a
sink,
water on tap and a bed, all pretty easy to achieve in an ambulance i guess.
he decided not to go ahead with self-build and purchased a talbot m/home
with an interior that i can only describe as being just very slightly under
A.1.
condition. a lucky find.
i'd be wary of self building unless you have a lot of spare time on your
hands
and are pretty experienced with practical projects.
there are (were?) companies out there that will part build in a team effort
with the owner, or even find base vehicles for you, so you may want to
consider that approach too...
cheers, al

Lots of people have. There's even a club for self-builders
(http://www.sbmcc.co.uk/)

The self-builders club has lots, many of which you can see on their
website without needing to join.

Much fewer companies will insure self-builds than will insure
"proprietary" motorhomes. If you plan more than "normal" recreational use
for the vehicle (e.g. full-timing), you might have issues getting
insurance. For example, I don't know any insurers who'll cover a self-
build motorhome used for full-timing. I've found cover for self-builds;
I've found cover for full-time motorhoming; I haven't found anyone who
covers both.
In any case, http://www.sbmcc.co.uk/ is a good place to start. Club
subscriptions are £15 p.a. Although I'm not a member, I've heard from
others that membership is worthwhile.
HTH,
Geoff
