Satellite Receiver - Advuce
I could do with some advice about satellite receivers.
I recently purchased a satellite suitcase kit from Maplins but it
would not receive a signal. I sent it back and they said it was OK so
I checked the NLB, cables and TV and got a larger dish but it still
did not work so I returned it again and they still said it was OK. So,
'once bitten twice shy,' I would like to know if anyone has a
receiver that works well that they can recommend.
I am also thinking of fitting a dish on my van roof that I can erect
and rotate from inside. Does anyone have any experience of these and
know where I can get a reasonably priced one (Not Maplins)

You must have had the one that I returned to Maplin ;) - that didn't work
either (same fault, wouldn't receive a signal)
Plus, the dish and assembly were crappy with a capital '\k', definitely one
of their shoddier products.
I'll watch the recommendations with interest.

You tell them its not working, if it's less than 6 months old they have
to replace it or refund you. Do let them keep send it back to you, also
make sure THEY pay for the postage costs.
get a grip and get it sorted

I bought a Satellite Rx from Maplin and dish/LNB/Tripod off eBay. In the
main, I have been delighted with it.. My only comment is that dish alignment
is very tricky and gets harder with bigger dishes (more gain, narrower
beamwidth). Assuming that you are aiming for Astra (home of SKY etc) there
are 3 satellites in the same bit of sky and it is very easy to hit the wrong
one which gives you all the symptoms of a broken Rx and the desire to ram
the box up the @rse of the person who sold it you.
Bear in mind that the pointing accuracy of a satellite dish is about 2
degrees and it usually takes about 5 seconds for the Rx to lock/synchronize
the data stream, so it is very easy to skip past the signal.
