The idea has been around for ages - though usually you look for a stone with
a natural hole and thread a loop through (offer a 5p bounty next time you
visit the beach and the kids'll provide loads.)

Drilling limestone (don't bother with anything harder) is easy with a padded
vice and a press.

BUT

They're not really much use.  They take up a lot more space than lead, they
don't hold the bottom as well and and they don't offer any noticeable
advantage in coarse fishing.

Some cynical carp tackle outlets sell them to gullible anglers as more
'natural' looking to the fish - who aren't in the least bothered and even if
they were, rounded beach pebbles are at least as unnatural as leads on the
bottom of an inland water.

Stones are occasionally of use as sacrificial weights when sea fishing over
really rough ground - don't bother with manufacture, stick with natural
holes and attach with rotten bottoms.

A weaker link.  Say you are using 5lb main line, put the weight on a 3lb
link and cast gently - if a fish pulls the weight into a snag you can pull
for a break and probably retain the fish.

Sea anglers sometimes have unlatching arrangements to allow them to cast
with a shock leader and then fish with the weight on a much lighter link.
