What happened to 'knock for knock'?
On 3rd August this year a biker ran into the back of me as I was slowing
down for a parked car (there was opposing traffic). I submitted a claim to
my insurance company (Zurich) and also to my Legal Expenses Insurance (MSL).

MSL have recovered my uninsured losses (ie my excess of £150.00) and sent me
a cheque to settle matters on 7th October.

My renewal premium notice has just arrived and, although my premium does not
appear to have been affected, it is shown that I have a 'not settled' claim.
When I contacted my broker I was told that although I had recovered my
uninsured losses, Zurich had not yet recovered the rest of the claim from
the biker's insurers.

I always thought that motor insurers had an agreement that each would settle
their own claims to avoid the costs of processing claims against each other
all the time? ie 'Knock for Knock. Have things changed?

I'm still chuffed with the renewal premium however: £235.00, fully comp,
protected NCD, legal expenses included, only £150.00 excess. I've had the
usual barrage of quote offers as renewal time has come around - and the next
nearest quote I've had so far has been £320.00.

The claim hasn't been closed so its still not settled. I fail to see
where the problem is. WTF does "knock for knock" have to do with
anything? That's when the fault is 50/50, not when a party is clearly at
fault.

Yes, not that you would have used Knock for Knock anyway. When blame is
shared nowadays, a proportion of each party's claim is paid by the other.

That's not a great price really. I only pay 10 more than that, live in
the south east, the car isn't garaged, it's a BMW, I'm 36 and wrote off a
car last year..

That's what I was thinking. I'm a long way off retirement and mine's
cheaper than that, including protected no-claims, legal expenses, 50,000
miles a year and Class 1 business use. My excess is also only £100.

That sounds about right for an old shed that's not capable of doing much

That first figure is awfully expensive, are you in a high risk group?

The only real difference with mine, is my legal expenses are not
covered - yet mine is around £150 -ish fully comp.

'Knock for knock' ended years ago - probably mid 90's when the insurance
companies realised that it was no good finding low risk customers when they
were paying 'k-f-k' repairs for damages caused by high risk drivers.

It is not the company, it is a matter of changing each renewal and
picking the cheaper one each time - on line is cheapest. Try some on

About 10 years ago I was driving home from college when there was a
car stopped on the DC in front of me that had been hit. There was a
girl inside it who was obviously upset so I stopped and helped push
her car to the side and took her home. She told me she worked in
insurance and to come down when my next quote was due which was in a
few weeks. When I went in to get the quote on the last day before
christmas, her boss welcomed me with a fuss, gave me a glass of wine
and quoted me insurance that was about 10% cheaper than I'd previously
been paying. I'm still with the same company and haven't found
anywhere cheaper at all.

It's very difficult to compare premiums because it varies as to area, type
of car, whether you are prepared to accept a high excess, whether you want
your NCD protected, whether you want legal expenses cover, whether a
courtesy car is provided throughout the period your car is off the road
(rather than just when it goes in for repair). etc. etc.
I'm pleased with my reneway premium of £235 (it was £212 last year) because
it has a low excess, and does provide protected NCD, legal expenses, and
immediate courtesy car. When the biker ran into the back of me, it caused no
bodywork damage other than scuffing - but did smash the rear offside light
cluster which rendered the car illegal of course. MSL, my legal expenses
insurer, delivered a Merc 'C' class to my door the next morning and I had it
for the full two weeks until my car was ready for collection.

It is possible to get very low quotes if you are prepared to accept high
excess, opt for no protected NCD, no legal expenses, no courtesy car, etc.

Yes, it did occur to me that where insurance companies are specialising in
different groups of motorists, the concept of each paying their own claims
rather than wasting time and money in each pursuing each other regularly for
recovery, might simply not work. If all insurance companies covered all
drivers then, on average, their costs from claims would be equal. If one
company specialises in low risk drivers then that would not be the case.
