All documents missing?
Not my car I can assure you :-)
A friend has just bought a car with a few days tax remaining and an 8
month MOT, but unfortunately with absolutely no documentation with it.
How does he go about sorting the mess out please?
First he needs a copy of the MOT and he does not know where the MOT was
done.

If I were in his position I'd forget about trying to get a copy
of the MOT.
If you have insurance you can tax it online, without the MOT
certificate itself as the MOT record should be in the database.
Costs a little more to tax it that way, but a lot easier than
trying to get a copy of the MOT certificate.

How do you do that, I thought you needed a reference number from the
renewal form?

You do.
But the seller will only have received that in the last 2/3 weeks if
there's a few days tax left. Is it certain it's lost?

It didn't cost any more when I taxed mine on line last month.
Why should it?

I thought so.
The seller, a garage, said the safe had been either broken into or
taken away (not sure which) with all of the documentation in it gone.
Is there any other way to get hold of that reference number - ring DVLA
as the new owner perhaps?

You don't. You can do it using the 'logbook', by entering the
Reg'n No and the Document Reference Number from it.
I know that is the case as I recently taxed my car without the
reminder or MOT certificate.

It costs an extra £2.50 if you use a Credit Card. Nothing extra
if you pay by Debit Card, Which I assume is how you paid.

Yup. In the couple of weeks between receiving the reminder and
the tax running out, it went walkies. Turned up a few days later.

Can he even prove title to the car? To buy a car without seeing the V5 (I
know, that shows registered keeper, not necessarily owner) was surely the
first mistake.

In that case I think he's stuffed, until he's confirmed as the
current owner, and registered as such, so he can be sent a
duplicate reg'n document.
Forget the MOT certificate, even if he had it, he still couldn't
tax the car, and AFAIK he can't tax it online until it's
registered in his name at the DVLA.

Only a receipt for the sum paid and the registration number from the
garage - hence the smiley in my original post.

Even if he somehow found the reference, he couldn't tax it online.
The DVLA would send the tax disc to the registered keeper's address.

Ah, right. I knew that, but didn't really consider that a cost of
paying online, just a cost of paying by credit card. You can't
pay by credit card at the post office, at any price.

First get a V5. He'll need to apply to DVLA, and it costs about £20.

If he had document reference number from the V5C, he could check it on the
Vosa site. Not sure if the DVLA would have it/give it to him.

He doesn't have the V5C, remember? It's gone walkies, too.
A slightly more obvious answer is that the sticker in the windscreen says
there's eight months MOT left...

There little point in getting a copy of the MOT certificate. It
should be recorded on the DVLA database, so if he has current
insurance and the original or copy V5C it can be taxed on line.

They'll probably check in any case.
In the numorous TV police car progs, they don't seem to give
producers if the insurance, MOT, and tax are confirmed as in
order on the ANPR database.
AFAIK you have to pay for a copy MOT certificate, so why waste
time and money getting a copy, when the chances are that it'll
never be needed. In 8 months time he'll need a new MOT cerificate
anyway.
