Road signs to come under review

Road signs to come under review
Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians are to have their say on the way British
road signs should look in the future.
The Department for Transport is carrying out its biggest review of traffic
signs in 40 years.
It says it wants to use the latest technology to cut congestion and
emissions, and improve safety, without cluttering the streets.
Transport Minister Rosie Winterton has also invited highways bodies and road
users' groups to give their views.
She said: "Road conditions have changed dramatically over the years and road
signs need to keep pace with that change to provide the best information
possible to all road users."
The review aims to ensure that out-of-date signs are removed, technology is
used to improve traffic flow, more up-to-date travel information is made
available and accident rates are reduced.
Reduce congestion
AA President Edmund King said: "Clear, concise, relevant road signs help
reduce congestion, CO2, frustration and accidents.
"Confusing signs do the opposite, so we welcome a root and branch review of
the UK's traffic signing system."
A steering group will meet next month to draw up plans for the review, which
will be conducted next year.
Whats the point? Most folk dont read them and the majority of them dont
understand them. Then there those that just plainly ignore them..

Indeed, I'm of the school of thought that says that most of them can be got
rid of which will make people take notice of what's going on around them.

At which point they get tested on the Highway Code.

A building in warrington has a small blue notice on the side which is
clearly visible from the road as you drive by. "Warning" in larger
letters, then below it "this is a sign" in much smaller letters which
take your attention away from the road while you try to focus on the
smaller type after seeing "Warning". Humourous when you know it is
there, but could be a danger if you were a driver unfamiliar with the
area.

Interesting. When I read that article my first thought was that they
were talking about direction signs, not warning signs. In the listed
aims of the review, reducing accident rates comes last.

..and how many times does that happen? I've never heard of the plods testing
anyone on the HC after their test - not even on the trafpol TV shows.

If the rules and instructions regarding road signs cn be changed then so can
the rules on testing driviers. Besides which I didn't say it was TrafPol
that would do the testing.
