Wife and the "Snakey Pass Thing"
Hi
Can anyone recommend other routes from the Chester area to Sheffield
avoiding the Snake Pass? My wife will be doing the run fairly regular
now and isn't too keen on the views offered by the Snake
Pass...'specially with the winter months fast approaching!
Cheers and tia

Yes, nearly all of the cross-Pennine routes can be recommended.

Pretty much city centre; this week she set off tea time thursday for
an early meeting friday then leaving 2.30pm and home at 5.30. Coming
home she went north on M1 to leeds then picked up M62 to M6 then M56.

Kinda hard to help.
She wouldn't want to cross the Pennines north of the M62 because of
extra distance, although the "best" route in a bad winter before the
M62 was built used to be be via Halifax - Rochdale.
If the A57 is reckoned toooo - risky then the route over Holme Moss
would be out of the question.
Ashton-under-Lyne > Huddersfield (the so - called "Floating Light"
route, is less so but is built up nearly all the way.
Saddleworth > Huddersfield is within sight of the M62 over most of
it's distance, and sheep are a hazard.
Best stick to the motorways is the best advice especially if the
weather might be "umpty". Of course if the government had actually
built the motorway from Sheffield to Greater Manchester that would
have been the best option. But, despite Lugless Duhgless Bollen's
frequent assertions that the government is addicted to "Perpetual
Roadbuilding" they didn't, save "niether use nor ornament" bits at the
ends, so it's either take the long way round on the motorways we have
or use a mountainous route built to take 1920s standard traffic.

Can we be sure it's the car that needs upgrading?

Getting up to the M62 is massively out of the way. It will take three
hours, and for city centre Sheffield you could leave the car in Chester.
I would suggest Woodhead A628 / A616 / A61 as the best quality,
easiest to follow route which will save time.

It's never going to happen now though. Motorway straight through the middle
of the world's second most visited national park?

Well they managed to build a motorway from Exeter across the Somerset
Levels (proposed world heritage site status), through the Cotswolds
(the country's largest {not 2nd largest} officially designated 'Area
of Outstanding Natural Beauty'), through/skirting the Lake District
National park (you can see the lakes from the Motorway and vica-versa)
and through the Scottish Borders and up the Clyde Valley to Glasgow,
443 milesin total.
To say that it will be impossible for all eternity to build another 25
miles to join Manchester with Sheffield is just being disingenuous.
Remember, they didn't build the Aire Valley Motorway either.

Train or coach is what I would recommend for a nervous driver.

Good option for a nervous driver though.

I'll put things another way. The field I work in is environment and
planning, so I know a little about this stuff. You CAN build anything almost
anywhere if you're willing to throw enough money at it or you're the
government. As far as designations go, AONB is a long way below National
Park.
There'd need to be serious demand for a link between the two cities, and I
can't see it happening as the M62 and A628 are both fairly acceptable ways
of getting from one place to the other, if not ideal. The terrain would make
motorway building a very difficult business, and the objections from locals
and pressure groups would be immense. The EIA would be an absolutely immense
and costly document - I suspect that almost any route through the Peak
District would probably hit several SSSIs. I read an EIA for a pipeline that
was built a few years ago that travelled through numerous designated sites
in an AONB and it was enormous, and that's for something with zero post
construction visual impact, noise, or ecological impact.
The other factors are that we just don't seem to be keen on building East -
West motorways in this country, and that we're not that keen on building
motorways at all. If we were to start serious roadbuilding again, I suspect
it would be focused on the south east and the M5 around Brum.

And of course, when did they build that? Back in the good old days when you
could build anything anywhere...

Only in the North West would nervous drivers prefer motorways.
In other areas you get used to driving on SC NSL trunk roads.
