Four dead after major crash on A9
Three adults and a child have died in a crash on the main road from Perth to
Inverness in the Highlands.
It is understood two cars burst into flames after the collision on the A9 at
The Slochd, north of Aviemore.
Emergency services were called to the crash, which also left a woman and a
child injured, at about 1515 BST.
Northern Constabulary said a woman died in a separate single-vehicle crash
on the B9163 between Cononbridge and Culbokie on the Black Isle at 1600 BST.
The A9 crash occurred on a stretch of single carriageway close to the Slochd
summit.
Police said two people were taken from the wreckage to Raigmore Hospital in
Inverness.
The road remains closed and diversions are in place.
Drivers were advised to avoid the area if at all possible as long tailbacks
were reported.
Parts of the A9 have a reputation as being amongst the most dangerous
stretches of trunk road in the UK.
Last week, the deaths of Paul Anderson and his granddaughter Samantha Jane
Carr led to renewed calls for the A9 to be made a dual carriageway to
improve safety.
Conservative MSP Murdo Fraser said there was a "compelling case" to upgrade
the road.

I've often written to The Scotsman newspapers letters page about the A9
Perth/I nverness. Not about the road per se but about the mentality and
behaviour of the cra drivers that use it. Its not the road that needs
upgraded but the fuckin moronic car drivers brains that need upgraded.

Be fair Kev, when a man needs a deep-fried Mars bar, four cans of Tennent's
Extra and a Tunnock's wafer, he is going to cut corners to get it.
Perhaps Holyrood should consider installing warning signs at these danger
spots reading "Danger, Doctor Ahead".

The amount of serious road accidents around the N and NE of Scotland -
often with no other vehicle involved - seem way above the national
average. Of course there are plenty of dodgy roads - like the A92 - which
is built almost like a motorway but has farm traffic crossing it. ;-(

I've driven the length of the A9 recently, and it's true that the road
is not inherently dangerous. However there are drivers of all types of
vehicle that are using it. I didn't see any near misses, but there's a
lot of potential.
I Also drove on the stretch of the A99 that is allegedly the most
dangerous road in Scotland (A99), and that was Ok too.

The southern part of the A92 is near me and there isnt any farm traffic on
it, but the sections that you refer to are all signed for farm traffic,
crossing etc. Im beginning to wonder what there is left for the authoritys
to do regarding safety - not much except more plod patrols.
Ive written (yet another) letter to The Scotsman about the A9 so we'll see
if its published on monday - I doubt it because they havent published the
last two. They seem to keep on blaming the road when its an innanimate
object. Its a feckin joke now.

I have to agree. The A9 is actually a fine road: good visiblilty in
places, a few bits of DC for easy overtakes. It's been a few years since
my last trip up, and I think there had been a good few improvements to
some of the more potentially dangerous junctions, and overall the only
variable left was driver error.

That's how it's done these days. Blame the road, the car, the lack of
stability control. I suspect your letter won't get published.

The A9 could be improved to DC but when you get brain dead numpties
trying to propel their Ford Galaxy MPV's at 100mph to get past the
last truck before the SC starts again then you better expect road
kill for the hawks and crows.

Dear Sir,
Today (26th July) witnessed yet another tragedy on the A9 Perth - Inverness
road. Over the years there have been many calls from many quarters demanding
that road be upgraded to dual carriageway. Despite the many of the visual
improvements such as fluorescent surrounds to warning signs, improved road
markings and lower speed limits on certain areas, yet there is still a high
number of fatalities. As an LGV1 driver who regularly drives this stretch I
witness incredibly reckless and irresponsible car driving by drivers who
want to shave a few seconds off a long journey. These people have absolutely
no regard for their own safety and that of others. There is only a certain
amount of safety improvments that can be carried out on the road. the
remaining improvements must be carried out by the road users.
Yours,
McKev

It got first place on the left hand side. Unfortunately it wasnt long enough
(or I'm not academic enough) to gain the black line underneath at the centre
right position.
Keep youre eyes peeled on the Herald tomorrow though. Theres a guy who wrote
in and gave his selfish car drivers opinion so I've emailed them and
enlightened him with this letter;
Dear Sir,
As an LGV1 driver who uses the A9 regularly some of his points that Peter
MacDonald (Letters 29th July) need correcting. The current UK law requires
that all goods vehicles 17 tonnes and over are limited to a maximum speed
limit of 40 MPH on all single carriageways including the A9 and travelling
at over this speed (especially through the speed cameras) results in the
typical 3 points endorsement and a £60 fine. It is completely impracticable
that goods vehicles should pull in to let other traffic past - we are
working and have time and cost requirements to meet. I'd also like to point
out to him that the roads are there to cater for all traffic - not just
cars.

A couple of points: There is no such thing as LGV1 and your biggoted
remarks about "car driving bt drivers who want to shave a few seconds
off a long journey" is just complete bollocks. When I "make progress"
it's because I enjoy it, not because I have any pressing need to save
time. Just because driving a lorry is only about getting from a to b as
quickly as possible, don't assume those who drive more "rewarding"
vehicles have the same objectives.

So why the "must get out in front of the lorry" routine at junctions
even though you're not even going the same way?
Why the "must cut across the front of the lorry even though there's a 1
mile gap behind it" motorway exit routine?

I've no idea. You'll have to ask someone who does it. Maybe it's
something to do with the fact that, unlike some lorry drivers on this
newsgroup, people don't tend to have psychic abilities and don't know in
advance which way the lorry is going to go, who knows? As I've said many
times, I don't claim to speak for any particular group of people. I just
speak for myself.

No idea. Maybe the car driver is a lorry driver on his/her day off. Oh,
of course, I forgot, you "know" it isn't a lorry driver because you're
psychic, like your bum-friend McKunt.

That happens to everyone, not just lorries. Some idiots simply have

"Biggotted" has one G.
"bt" is a telephone company. I think you meant "by".
"a to b" would normally have "A" and "B" capitalised.
"Tomorrows" should have an apostrophe.
Oh, and "Don't you look..." is a question, so should have a question
mark, not a full stop.

What is wrong with being a lorry driver?
I rather think your attitude stinks on this point - why is any job more or
less important than being a lorry driver? I would have thought you could be
intelligent enough to understand teamwork shouldn't stop at the office door.
Conor is guilty here as well. Maybe the majority of the drivers cutting you
up are just poor drivers - they will do the same to motorbike, cars and
cyclists after all.

I wasn't criticising McKunts spelling. It was his poor grasp of facts,
for example, there's no such thing as an LGV1 driver.

So? I wasn't criticising his spelling, so your point in null and void.

Nothing. But that's doesn't mean a lorry driver has a right to criticise
those who have different aspirations.

Of course, but this is Conor we're talking about here. Someon who thinks
lorry drivers are far more important than anyone else.

Agian, Conor and his cronies can't accept that lorry drivers can do any
wrong.

I wasn't refering to myself. I find my Skoda fairly rewarding, others
may not. It's a free country. I'm sure you'd agree with me, however,
that pretty much any modern car would be a more rewarding drive than a
truck.

[Your response to McKev's spelling mistake, earlier in the thread]

Hmmm, I've driven a Mk 3 Mondeo diesel.... so I reckon it would be a
close-run thing.

What trucks have you driven?
I must admit that I have never driven a Skoda, although I have been a
passenger in many of them, minicab drivers and their ilk seem to favour
them.

Why not? Everyone and his cat seems to think it's perfectly OK to make
adverse comments about truck drivers, freedom to insult their intelligence
and driving skills appears to be a right, how come it shouldn't work the
other way round.

I'm sure that's not the case, you are just letting your inferiority complex
wind you up.

Then you are sadly misinformed, regardless of the medium of motorised
transport you drive/fly/sail/ride, there are pigs of every genre.
I would get more pleasure out of a Volvo F16 at 44 tonnes than many modern
small cars. I would rather fly a Fuji F200 or a Pitts special than a Cessna
150, I would rather sail my Gaff Rigged Ketch or a Swan 44 than any
Beneteau, or ride my BMW even though it's only fifty horsepower than just
about any Jap superbike.
Still if you find a Skoda fairly rewarding then 'taste' in vehicles has
passed way over your head.

Girls....
If you want to piss off your mother, here's what I suggest.
The next time you're out driving around, and your mum's in the car, stop
in front of the local strip club.
Put the car in park, turn to your mother, and say, "I'll be right back. I
just have to run in and pick up my cheque."
