Once the cup is gone the ball grinds against the suspension arm with
considerable force - leave it for long and it can wear away the recess
that the cup fits in so a replacement cup isn't properly supported and
wears rapidly or breaks up.  Not totally off-topic - the weird
suspension was designed by one Alex Moulton.
