Replacing a cycle computer
Evening all,

As i was riding home last night, my computer came adrift from its clip
socket thing and went on a trip of its own across the road. It was a
Cateye Enduro 8, which are supposed to be able to handle rough conditions,
but 'rough conditions' apparently doesn't involve being run over by a
motorbike, so what i have now is a piece of mangled circuit board and some
fond memories.

The clip, cables, sensor etc are all still on the bike. Is it possible to
buy just a computer, or do you always get the paraphernalia too?

The Enduro 8 is described as being a more rugged version of the Mity 8.
However, i've read that the only difference is in the cable. Since i'm
going to be reusing my existing cable, this means the Mity would be just
as good as the Enduro. Is it true that the cable is the only difference,
and are the two compatible in terms of socket?

I should probably be bothering Cateye customer services with these
questions rather than urc, but if Mr Chapman can post about piglets and
get away with it ...

You will tend to get the other bits. You might find somebody willing to give
you a couple of quid for them though - they do get damaged, or people want
to fit to more than one bike.

Was certainly true of the old mity/enduro, and looking at wiggles website
for spares indicates it's still the case. They could do something like make
the enduro slightly more resistant to contact bounce (via signal
processing), but I suspect they don't.

Or have had their bike stolen, with the cables but without the computer.
This happened to me - but I don't recall where or what model the
computer is.

No-one has ever proved that cycle helmets make cycling any safer at the
population level, and anyway cycling is about as safe per mile as walking.

Normally get the extra wires and stuff. But that's no bad thing as they
either go on a spare bike, or you sell them to someone who has wrecked the
wires on their setup.

Earlier models are identical apart from the thicker sensor cable on the
Enduro (and changes of case plastic colouring); I have one of each, and they
swap between three bikes with various mounts/wires.
