brookes 135
Hi,
I've just treated myself to a Brookes B135, delivery expected within a
week. I'm racking my brains to remember the name of the oil that
cyclsists used to rub into their saddles (and possibly still do).
Anyone want to refresh my memory..?
Muchos gracias.

I've allways used Brooks Proofide, though others swear by neatsfoot oil (but take care - a lot of the stuff labled as neatsfoot contains mineral oils - not good for bike saddles).

I have a tin of proofide, which is like old fashioned dubbin, but have
always used nikwax, both the wax tin and the aqueous wet or dry
application. The saddles seem to be doing well compared to some others I
have seen. Perhaps that is because I am not putting in the miles I should.

I've used nikwax on and off, and it softens the leather an awful lot.
That may not be a problem, but personally I wouldn't recommend lathering
the stuff on.
As an aside, the best I've found is Tucsan(sp?) renovating shoe polish,
which doesn't seem to be available anymore. It waterproofs nicely and
seems to shrink and tighten the leather.
Thoughts anyone?

I was resisting that. It is of course true, but not helpful, since it's
probably a rebadged Giant Anteater conditioner or something.
Ah, it appears to contain;
Tallow, Cod oil, Vegetable oil, Paraffin wax, Beeswax & Citronella oil.
A quick google suggest sno-proof is similar, or even Kiwi shoe polish.
Still, I can get the proofide reasonably easy, so I'll probably stick
with it.

On the other hand, a tub's a fiver and lasts forever, they aren't
_exactly_ conning us out of a fortune even if it is something common
relabelled.
