You know, when I addressed the topic of whacko, off-topic postings a
copule of months ago, I was soundly shot down and told that I didn't
know what I was talking about. And while I still probably don't know
what I'm talking about, I'm comforted by the fact that I'm not the
only one who is annoyed by these postings.

Usenet is pretty weak in this regards. Craigslist or AOL
have "big brothers" who can make messages disappear.
A good newsreader can hide these posts if the there
is a predictable pattern in the headers.
One nut in a couple of the sports groups posts
really filfthy comments up to a hundred times a
day under a new alias every week. Been kicked off
a half dozen ISPs; people have posted his identity,
phone number, and social security number- but still
continues.

David,

The point isn't how annoying these people are - and they really are
annoying - but that there really isn't anything you can do to stop it.
Trying to control whackos on Usenet is like trying to get cats to walk
in a parade. You're never going to achieve it, and all you'll have to
show for your trouble trying is elevated blood pressure.

If your newsreader app has the facility (something that Google Groups
is sorely lacking IMO), just killfile the guy and move on to something
more interesting. :-)

Cheers,

Chris

Deliberately.

So stay with AOL or Craigslist.

I can send out cancel signals as well as the next person but that's not
necessarily regarded as a friendly act by admins every where.

Usenet (news:) is optional. It's also lowest priority. An ISP or a
computer can chose NOT to take it. Anyone is free to comment subject
to conventions of storage. You or the ISP agree to set some amount of
disk space as a public area and bandwidth and machine cycles for these
messages to come thru. You pick and chose what hierarchies and what
groups you get and what you chose to read or ignore. We aren't here to
baby sit you. Well maybe some of the people in the uk.* hierarchy in
the JANET days do (but that's Orwell and not).

If you want to comment, in an unmoderated news group, you can do that,
but at least cut down on the followups instead of stupidly and
blindly propagating across the entire set of cross posted news groups.
And that way, we who maintain usenet also maintain a sense (the virtual
illusion) of free speech. And get others to read headers, edit headers,
and cut down on followups. It's easier than strong arming people.

The storage will be recycled in a day or two if not sooner or later.
